Our local Library is a great place to get all kinds of books and magazines really cheap. I've found a few canning & dehydrating, prepping books for $1.00--2.00. They also sell older DVD's and CD's for .50 I scored last year and found an awesome First-Aid book with great step by step instructions on how to do stiches. We home school also, so as a project my son and I practiced doing stiches on a large chicken with skin we bought before I cooked it for dinner. Great idea to have crutches on hand. They don't take up much room but in an emergency they may come in very handy. Grab a few, Great bartering item if someone is desperate.

I've gotten hand tools at the thrift store that most people wouldn't even know what to use them for today. LOL I know you were talking about candles for lighting but they eventually will be used up. Here's what I have added to my stores for that purpose: Solar yard stakes. You can get them in different brightness levels and prices (go at end of summer for discounts/clearance pricing) You can put them in a bucket and place them outside to charge then bring them inside and place them around the home for low level lighting. If the electricity is out for an extended time, you will find that you will return to your natural rhythm for sleep. You'll get sleepy just as the sun starts to go down and you'll wake up just before sunrise. We went 6 months with no electricity and that's what happened to us. In my experience, I was more relaxed, less tense. It was an amazing time! When the electricity was turned back on (we finally got it) I could literally FEEL the difference! Great info, lovely lady. God bless you and yours!

I have bought all the items you suggested, but also several Coleman stoves, which use a variety of fuel, one says it is dual fuel. Propane will not work in very cold temps, so having other options is a good idea. I also have a Coleman oven which works on top of the stove and a clay stone to stop food burning. Obviously, nobody needs half a dozen stoves, but I can fix them up with a dab of paint to sell on Craig's List, or keep to barter with. I even have a new Kangaroo Stove from Australia, which is my favourite. Camping lamps can also come in handy, again, I have several I can share with other family members. A large buffet size coffee percolator can be used to heat water quickly in the RV or using a generator. I always make it a point to have several different options when it comes to various tasks, just in case plans A and B fail. I bought two metal Army quality gerry cans for extra petrol in the RV, and keep my tank filled at all times, same with the car. When it comes to woolen blankets, my mother told me that one blanket underneath is worth two on top. Of course, as usual she was right! I also carry good quality sleeping bags in my RV and also in my car in case of an emergency, along with extra clothes, food and water, jumper cables, extra oil, gas can, tire inflater and other gear. Comfortable walking shoes, and a backpack in case I need to walk a long distance. I have pet supplies handy too.

One of my favorite things to look for is unscented candles, because if you burn more than one at a time scent overload. I have many stories on how I used candles such as: light, warmth, and warming food. The one that really stands out for me was for warmth. The power was out, and I safely burned about 15 to 18 candles in a single wide living room/kitchen area, hallway blocked, and brought the temperature from 37° to 71°. Great video and God bless.

A brand new pampered chef rotary cheese grater for 3.99 (I believe they sell for over $30). I am going back for some home made heavy quilts, thick heavy ones like grandma use to make. I find dehydrators a lot. I kept 3 including a 5 tray Excalibur I paid $15 for and have given one to each of my kids. Today I picked up a really nice poncho and 3 single wall stainless bottles with tops for my get home supplies. In addition, I picked up some baby items for under $10 that will be needed for a new granddaughter in a couple weeks.

Exactly the thing with thrift store candles, especially those really big ones that the wick burns a tunnel down into, I recycle those into useful sized candles no more than 2 inches across. Also good for the canning jars, but seem to be rare around here.

Best advice ever, if don't know, LEARN !! When people ask me if this or that works in the garden, sometimes I say TRY and then you will know. That is one way to do it. Of course there are many videos, and books. Plus experienced gardeners that don't mind at all, if you ask them a question.....

About two years ago I was at the Goodwill and saw one of those recliners that you can press a button and it will stand you up from sitting or sit you down. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis and thought it might come in handy. It was only $75 (they usually run $400-600). Less than a week later, when my hubby hadn't had a chance to get someone to help him get it out of the van. I fell on our stairs. I landed with my spine exactly parallel to the landing. I have never had so much pain in my entire life and I have had kidney stones and a baby over 10#! I got my first and hopefully last ambulance ride. Gobs of x-rays where each was a new painful experience. Eventually the doctor said I had no fractures which I could tell surprised her, but really bad osteoarthritis. Due to the current insurance and Medicare rules, I couldn't stay at the hospital as I needed help to do anything. So hubby had to drive me home. Thankfully I had found a bedside commode/shower chair new for $10 at our local thrift store. And with his help I was able to use the commode right next to the bed as I couldn't walk. He got some guys to help him bring that recliner up and between the BSC and the recliner from thrift stores, less than $100 I was able to deal with it all. But oh my goodness the pain. Now I didn't know I was going to need one of those recliners the next week, but I have seen so much of God's blessings and providing for me even before I needed something. Definitely is you are a serious prepper, keep those medical aids and splints. If you are going to keep a first aid kit make sure it is adequate. I laugh when a kit is being extolled as having 73 pieces or whatever and 10 - 20 of the pieces are those miniature bandaids, and the little tiny 1" square gauze pads that won't do diddly if someone is really bleeding. Be sure to at least have a box with 4" x 4" gauze pads, with plenty of them for changing dressings. Gauze rolls, Ace wraps, tweezers. And a small bottle of Elmer's white glue. If someone gets a splinter that you can just barely feel it, but can't pull it out, put a coating of the Elmer's glue, let it dry and then peel it off and the splinter should pull out with the dried glue.

Loved reading your comment. Sounds like you had a very difficult time! But the part that is such a blessing is where you give the Lord glory for providing for you before you knew you needed the provision. Ain't God good! I've had so many experiences like that in my life, where Jesus made sure I had what I needed before I needed it. Your story blessed me. Thank you for sharing.

Watch for sanitary products. Unopened packets can be used for emergency bandages and compression to stop bleeding, so can tampons if needed but only when required to stop bleeding in hole injuries and immediate hospital care. Incontinence products for adults and obviously diapers for kiddos. Also watch for storage jars and tins as they are less expensive than the current fancy ones. They will protect your foods and clothing. Put bags or dishes of mint or spearmint as it repeals bugs and rodents. Not as well as mothballs but it smells better and the extra makes good teas.

I have a local thrift store and their prices are also more than what the items cost new. Over the years I have gotten some amazing things there when they would have 50-90% off . They don't even do that anymore. It's so sad they will keep the same items out when the back room is full of stuff. It would be better to mark it down get some money out of it and put new stock out . I am beginning to suspect they are just in it to make money for themselves.

If you buy pressure cookers from the thrift store, remember to buy one which comes with the rubber gasket in good condition. Sometimes, it is a hassle trying to find one to fit, especially as electric pressure cookers are becoming more popular now.
