Great information, Ron! I think you turned your 411 Himalayan into the new Himalayan 450. RE is pushing the Scram and Himalayan out the door with incentives to make room for the new 450 for the spring of 2024. Here in Vegas at eurocycle, the Hunter is selling. The RE area is small and very few RE bikes on the floor. Utube seems to bring the most and current information. Thank you for your honest, informative videos. The only thing is that the new 450 will not be a chugger like the 411Long Stroke. If it is running 40hp, then it is a short stroke which means it is a more on road design like the Vstrom. The relaxed tractoring ability will keep the 411LS a favorite for many who prefer off roading with a relaxing 8 hp at 2200 rpm. With a short stroke, you will be having under 2 hp at that 2200 rpm which means higher revs required and a less relaxing and more demanding trail experience. In engineering, everything has its price, if you want the 40 hp for the street, it will have to come off the lower end. I foresee the 411LS being a favorite amongst the older riders who would rather upgrade the engine for a little more performance and maintain the low end power that is such a big draw on the Himmy. Just watching the vid, Ron was chugging and keeping up with the kids as they were winding their engines out. That is going to be the difference between the new 450 and the old 411LS.

I fitted 1 tooth extra on my Himalayan as I mostly ride it on the road it's my daily ride to work bike it will sit comfortably at 70mph , it's just over 2 years old now with 14k miles , the only problems I have had are the feeble rear rack cracked, ( welded it up with some bracing) and at the end of its second winter the rear brake master cylinder seized. Other than that I would recommend the Himalayan, my weekend toy 650 continental gt will leave it for dead in a straight line, but down bumpy British back roads the himi out handles it no question. 🇬🇧🇬🇧👍

@@chrisfrantz2674 Hey Chris! Yes I did both. But I closer to 220. For what you ride I think it would be worth a shot. You’ll probably end up needing a sprocket and a chain of your swingarm axle is mostly forward. "I can't go anywhere around here without needing to go 65." That's a refrain I hear often from motorcycle riders around here. I always find myself questioning the term "needing" and think it more aptly should be "wanting." I understand wanting. But not needing. Yesterday I had to take my 149cc Vespa in for the PA Safety Inspection. It required riding in the rain on a road with a 55mph speed limit where most of the traffic was moving at 65. My little Vespa could manage 55 on the flat and would drop to 50 on the inclines. I didn't want to go faster and I didn't need to go faster because I would just pull over and let the cars and trucks pass when necessary. But I know most riders don't want to do that. With the Himalayan I can easily track along at 65 so it's not an issue on those kinds of two-lane roads. But on the Interstate highways, I80 and I99 the speed limit is 70 with most traffic moving faster. I will run the Himalayan at 70 and just let the traffic flow around me. Or find a common carrier tractor-trailer rig that the company has them locked at 65 and follow them. The stock Himalayan is workable on any highway dependent on my willingness to adapt myself rather than modify the motorcycle. For me, if I was concerned about necessary higher speed performance I would have bought a Kawasaki KLR 650 or a BMW F650 GS. Similar weight and performance to the Himalayan but much more capable at higher speeds. But I bought the Himalayan specifically for it's diminished power and speed so for me it's not something I want to "fix" or focus on power where I "need" it. It was interesting to listen to your descriptions of the changes and how it affected the ride. And I would imagine some regular riding on the dirt bike track would increase skill levels a lot. Thanks for sharing it all. I enjoyed watching.
@swcoloradoadventures
Жыл бұрын
Hey Steve! Thanks for the thoughts. The biggest challenge is in two parts. One, I live in the mountains. My initial impression of the bike was that the 65 speed would be a non-issue, but I was a bit off. Maybe I just need to lose weight to Itchy Boots level. The real reason I want it is to simply not be another reason for locals to have to slow down or pass. We get so much tourist traffic in RVs and folks not accustomed to driving in the mountains, it can be a frustration for people just going to work. Now, that does present the great point you made about simply following slower traffic. There are plenty of options for that. So, the perceived need is diminished. I don't want to go fast, but I don't want to be a hindrance either. I remember reading the motorcycle handbook many years ago (30+). One of the big points I took away from it was for motorcycle defensive driving. It said stay in front of traffic to mitigate getting boxed in. Sure doesn't mean be crazy, just give yourself more options. And for dirt. I am enjoying the time out on the track. Just like any ride on rough terrain, I am always more comfortable on the way back. The theory is, given enough practice, I can have the same confidence and relaxed state starting a ride. Its a theory. Thanks for the good stuff. I really appreciate your perspective and easy going approach.

The I80 pops up to 80mph across most of Wyoming. A smidge of extra power sort of sits right in between 'need' and 'want' at those speeds IMO as I can't really pull over to let trucks pass and they're almost exclusively traveling faster than the posted speed limit. To your point however I typically have my gps app take me down backroads instead of on the interstate where possible as I don't 'need' to get on the freeway. I could also purchase a different bike but the Himalayan, to me, feels like it's *almost* there at stock.

My bike has the YSS front and back which makes for a better RIDE ! I cruise the back roads at 50/60mph .. Hey Ron! I saw this tec cam video with comments on the 16 tooth sprocket and your mods video from 2 weeks ago. Great stuff! Your bike looks great! The work on the front "mini panniers/crash guards/light mounts" etc must have been a real puzzle, but well worth the time in terms of having your headlight turn in the direction of your input at the handle bars. I've never liked that overbuilt, immobile headstock setup, especially on an off-road, adventure, dualsport bike. Makes it much harder to navigate safely, especially in low light conditions. I mounted two high power LED accessory lights to account for that deficiency. The handguards look awesome and will definitely deliver if and when needed. May I ask, did you use a particular metal polish on the aluminum mini shields along with your buffer? Regardless, they look great and smart plan way back when ordering the Delkevic slip on in deciding you were going to keep the header pipe, in part, because of the shields. Boot melt is no fun, and neither is having to reinstall the stock cats when failing an inspection. I will definitely be following your lead with the 16 tooth sprocket, tec cam, air filter upgrade, and Delkevic slip on, and then that will be it for me, at least for this season! any changes in fuel consumption??

It’s up and down. But, that’s because I’m riding on roads and trails from what it seems. When I was running in the cam had 16 tooth on for most of it so I could go faster while staying under the max rpm. During that time, I ran 73 mpg avg. Since then, however, I’ve been hitting the trails hard and testing out performance. So, it’s a bit harder than I would normally ride day to day. Last checkpoint was 64 mpg. Previous to all the changes I was averaging around 70 mpg. So much depends on what I’m riding it seems. It would go down every time I did more off road. That’s not a super precise answer, but I hope it helps explain what I’m getting. It would be much easier to tell if I had a regular commute. Just installed the PT ECU and am playing with the maps. My guess is the next check will be under the 64 because I am adding more fuel to the mix and advancing the timing. We’ll see what that actually looks like. Thanks!

@@swcoloradoadventures I'm now on 74,5 mpg (US) average over 2400 miles commuting and last tank was even 80 mpg US. Would be important for me to keep this good milage up because the fuelprices are up to 1,80€/litre (7,45USD/gallon) now here in the Netherlands. greeting and keep up the good work Peter Prins

I have a more breathing exhaust and I opened up the airbox ( standard airfilter though)

@@Onrust123 I can totally see how that is super important for you. Interesting mix of variables weighing on fuel costs… I really can’t imagine going down as a result of the sprocket at all. The cam possibly a bit. But, seems like the two may offset. The cam is much more difficult to test out on a whim though. Thanks, Peter!

@@Onrust123 I did that as well. delkevic exhaust, open air box and k&n filter. Small incremental movements with just about anything. Riding hard seems to be the most damning situation on economy. More testing to come. Thanks!
