I grew up in a home with the tick of an old clock in the back ground. I never paid any attention to it when I was young. It was an old New Haven Gingerbread clock. @@jamesmartin5370 Well, after soaking the movement in mineral spirits for a couple days and then oiling it I got to work again. It's been going for a couple days now and seems to be keeping pretty good time although the ticking is a little uneven. The half hour bell and gong strikes work properly as well. I learned a lot from your video even though my skills in this area are pretty limited. If it stays running I will tackle the missing glass and broken hinge on the bezel. Before you take them apart. Study the positions of each gear and lever one at a time on the chime side. Even if you need to draw some notes and take some pictures. When you put it back together attempt to line them up the same way and it will surprisingly go together correctly. I usually need to loosen things up and rotate a wheel or two a couple of teeth to get right. The people building these put them together all day long to 100s of them each day so it was 2nd nature to them.

Moebius 8200/8201 or similar will work, a chart showing different recommended lubricants for clock parts can be found at: www.afswitzerland.com/pdf/Tools-2017AFCatalogue.pdf Keystone has several types and can be found at: timesavers.com/search.html?q=mainspring+lubricant In this clock I used some B & K brand No# OL-58, from Ronell, can be seen at: www.ronellclock.com/Mainspring-Grease_c162.htm A lot of choices out there, to my knowledge no one has done any actual certified stress or destruction test and made it available on a comparison chart that can be used by the us to determine if product claims are valid. I have some mainsprings that have had considerable galling but unable to relate it to any particular brand or type of lubricant used. Too thin of product will cause excessive friction and possible galling, too thick will cause slow release and sticking of mainspring so best we can do is choose a lubricant in the middle of the spectrum from charts that are put out by manufacturers and hope all will be good. Mainsprings must be completely smooth and uniform in strength throughout its length; the more finely polished, the better their performance. A smaller amount rather than too much of lubrication on the mainspring surface is beneficial. So don't soak it but get a good oil film on it.

Or start your own business or work from home. There's a lot of flexibility in the field, depending on your particular goals. Knowledge and know how of small mechanical devices is in high demand in jobs that have combined electronics with micro mechanical devices. Aircraft industry, medical device industry, hybrid microelectronics, gyros and robotics all need people that have similar abilities as that of a horologist.

Hi Jagdish, My response is a little late. Do you mean Bim Bam clock? On most of those, to set pendulum, to regulate the time. I would start out with the adjusting nut on the bottom of pendulum in the middle of the threaded rod. Then let it run for a day and check to see if its running fast or slow. To speed the clock up turn the nut to raise the pendulum. To slow the clock down turn the nut to lower the pendulum. Do this for several days until its keeping time.

I have a sessions mantel clock. I would like to know how often it needs to be inspected and oiled.
@jamesmartin5370
Жыл бұрын
There is not one standard answer to this that applies to all clocks, just to many variables for it to be an exact science. Variables like, environmental conditions, geographical location, temperature, humidity, type of dust contaminations. In a clean, dry, temperature controlled condition, they can survive longer between oiling's than one in the adverse conditions. Under ideal conditions using a synthetic clock oils, a mantel clock will last many years with an oiling every 2 years and cleaning every 3rd oiling or so can give a lifetime of trouble free operation. Many of the clocks I receive have went 20 or 30 years without any oil or inspection at all, some still running but need bushings due to mainly the oil dried up and dirt contamination that causes wear. Oiling can be done by you if you remove the movement and know where to apply the correct amount of lubercant. If we are talking certified clocks, this takes us into a different category, parts and materials in the movements are similar to yours. This gets into Government, railroad, and military clocks. These were on strict maintenance schedules of not more than one year for inspection, cleaning, and in most cases new mainsprings were installed. Depends on if a person wants to stick to a certified clock maintenance schedule or something less but still prevent wear on the movement.
@ragtimejohn

@jamesmartin5370

I have not seen any certified test results using any scientific methods on clock lubricant's. Stay with clock lubricant's that are synthetic or their equal. Clock oils stay put where applied on a clean smooth surface, most other oils will migrate and creep away from where they are put.

They make clamps for this but you should use a spring winder with them.. As an alternative, Sometimes you can just let the springs all the way down until no power is on them and they can usually be removed and installed this way if you are careful. I have used bailing wire on some that the spring clamps won't fit on but you should have leather gloves if they are wound up and you should use a spring winder to release them safely.

The new spring is maybe 1/8" longer than original. Anything obvious I am missing? The new spring is about .001" thicker than tbe original as well. Thanks for allntbe great videos. That has to be great granddad on your wal? Thanks, Barry
@jamesmartin5370
2 жыл бұрын
I would say suspension spring may need to be thinner, they are inexpensive, you should have several on hand to experiment with. Also its best for inflection point to be aligned with the arbor for the verge. This is for minimal friction from sliding where the crutch pushed the pendulum/leader. For a loaded spring, inflection point is just below center of the spring. The lighter the spring, the more this goes lower. A thicker or wider spring will speed up rate of the pendulum. A heavy bob is less effected by this than a light one.

Started with a quality automotive high build primer, then block sanded. Finished with flat Black spray paint, then hand rubbed using 3M 05928 FINESSE-IT GLAZE to get the patina look.

Are Sessions Mantle Clocks with two adjustment holes older or newer than the clocks with 3 adjustment holes? Or, how do I determine the age of a clock that I have? Most of the label is worn off. I'm not sure it goes with the clock I have anyways.

Send me some pictures of it and I will see what I can do to help date it. Pictures of the movement, case, label, and any numbers that may be on the bottom or back of case. My email is jamesmart55@hotmail.com

Nice restoration. Curious as to why you chose not to use Hyde glue for pasting the label on the back, I do believe Hyde glue is period correct and available even today

This Elmer's brand of glue-all is sold as an acid free glue and seemed like a good choice since we had it on hand.

I would have put that nasty old thing in the cleaner first thing before doing anything else. Let the springs down, and into the cleaner. And then the dis assembly and whatever.

James. I just bought my first Sessions Mantle Clock, just like that one, today. Mine is actually in better shape than this one, thankfully. The brass feet and side handles are black, likely corroded black, I suppose. Should I clean them up, and if so, what should I use, and how is that done. Also the Black enamel finish looks pretty sad, aged, and a bit of patina, and someone actually had set a wet glass on the top which left a ring on the finish. Should I simply clean the finish, with what, or repaint all the black finish, if so, with what? Lastly, what is the small hole with the square pin, at the top of the clock dial for? I'm so glad you shared this video of this clock being restored. I would like to get a label to put on the back of mine. The label is about 80% there, but, very brittle, and faded black to brown. It looks like there might be a number on it. Would that be a useful serial number which might reveal the date of manufacture? Thank You James!

That small hole has a square shaft in there, the original keys for these had two sized squares on them. The small hole is where you regulate the movement for run fast or run slow. Original pendulums on these are usually not adjustable so need to regulate from the dial side. The feet on the one in the video are made from pot metal that were spray painted gold, so you could just repaint if needed because once the paint wears off its ugly pot metal that gets exposed.

You didn't explain what kind of paint you used on the case and how you prepped it. How much do you get for a restoration like this?
