Marx AA American Airlines Douglas DC4 "The Flagship" NC2100 Pressed Steel Airplane from the 1940's is restored and brought to a mirror finish.
Decals were custom made to replicate the originals, missing parts were hand fabricated, and rust was sandblasted away before everything was wire wheeled and polished
This was the largest airplane Marx made and it was used over the years as both American Airlines and Pan-Am. These came in four versions or "Marks". The early version had just propellers that would free wheel to spin. The Mark 2 had the opening cabin door and the freewheeling props. Mark 3
had a wheels-turns-props (WTP) option only. This means the props would turn when rolled on the floor. The Mark 4 which featured the WTP props and the opening cabin door.
This plane is an earlier Mark 2 version, with free wheeling propellers and the opening cabin door.
I've done this video a bit different, I tried to focus more on the work involved with the process instead of the popular "quick-cut" style where you see the first moment each step begins and then a cut to the final moment before it ends. I think a lot is lost from doing the video editing this way. The hours of labor involved is of course lost but with it the respect for the craft is diminished as people see a quick turnaround and assume this happens without your hands getting dirty, and my hands will show that is far from the truth. So with this restoration I'm showcasing not only this amazing antique toy, but the process by which it is brought back to life.
