Filmed on Memorial Day, 1941, by my grandfather Gustave Martens in College Point, NY. Yes, this is really the year 1941 (wasn't 16mm Kodachrome gorgeous?) nearly 6 months before the attack on Pearl Harbor catapulted the United States into World War Two. By the time Grandpa made this, most Americans were consigned to the inevitability of their country's entry into the conflicts raging beyond their shores, although there were still isolationists decrying that America had no business getting involved. I wonder what was on the minds of these College Pointers as they watched this highly patriotic parade on a holiday that honored the memory of American soldiers.
My father, 12 years old at the time, appears to the extreme right in the back row of the final scene. Grandpa himself, who was a Boy Scout leader, appears front and center with his troop beginning at 4:10. I assume he had handed the camera over to Grandma to continue filming.
