In the early 1940s, a large hospital complex was developed and built on the already large Pilgrim State Hospital grounds, which itself has been built in 1931 and would become the largest mental hospital throughout the entire world at that time. Once completed, this secondary and somewhat smaller facility was leased to the U.S. Army. Named “Mason General Hospital,” it served as a POW camp, tuberculosis hospital, and a psychiatric center for veterans. In 1946, renowned filmmaker John Houston, made a documentary at the facility called "Let There Be Light," which showed the effects of war on mental health. But the resulting film was considered to be so highly controversial that it was not released to be seen by the public until 1981.
This is that documentary.
