If you measure the hole size you can probably match up a freeze plug by size that would fit.

I like the rubber seal you put over the input shaft that keeps the water out of the gearbox. Looks like that is a mod you did. Any idea what seal that was? I would like to put something similar on mine to keep the moisture out if possible.

The rubber around the sleeve in the video was made onto it already.

I have a '61 Allis Chalmers D12 tractor with a Ross Steering Gear. The steering arm seal has failed so I get a steady drip drip drip of oil down the arm and the side cover of the tractor. I purchased a new seal from Agco and would like to install it without tearing the box down. Can I pull the old seal out with a self tapping screw and install the new seal. I don't see a C clip holding the seal on mine and didn't see one in your video either. I suspect there isn't any pressure in the steering box so perhaps a clip isn't necessary to retain the seal. I thought perhaps the seal is installed from inside the box but your video would suggest not. Any advice welcome. Outstanding video by the way and beautiful restoration.

Thanks and you are 100 percent correct. You should be able to pull it like you stated. I like to use a 3 inch long deck screw or drywall screw. Tap with a hammer to get started and screw it in.

Thanks. Are you referring to the metal end cap on the bottom covering g the bearing? I filler with gear oil up to the fill hole after mounting but others have filled with grease.

Great job! What are things to watch or watch out for when disassembling the major assemblies? like how many shims there is, where is gears orientation, shaft position etc. When that mounts up is there a bracket or clamp also?
@JPN76

It's really not bad but I would note how many shims for sure and if there is too much end play in a shaft before you start so you know if you need to try less shims when putting it back together. Also on parts that can be on either side, remeber what side it was on like the differential carrier bearings etc..with gearboxes or other assemblies take a lot of pics. I had to go back to my videos several times to see how it goes back together.

Question about the steering gear. My model C has a lot of wear as well, haven't taken it apart but looks like the consensus is the the follower pin wears out on these. Someone mentioned it can be replaced with a John Deere AM1515T. The pin looks similar to yours. Wasn't sure if the pin can be knocked out from the backside and possibly replaced with it. Do you recall?

On the back I do not see a parting line. It looked one piece but they do sell it separately. It looks exactly like the JD pin. Maybe drill it out then press and weld. www.steinertractor.com/ACS3048-Steering-Levershaft-Pin-AC-B?mkwid=|pcrid||pkw||pmt||slid||pdv|m|product|ACS3048|pgrid||cpgnid|17561055818|ptaid||adtext||&gclid=Cj0KCQjwtO-kBhDIARIsAL6LoreK-ze2QOD6MXNRofAMrWIJTN7Jr9MQk1OdXw2XDzsKNmuIcAr3XYMaAtE0EALw_wcB

Just saw this on the link above..... The old pin must be machined out. If you are not a competent machinist, then you will have to employ the services of a machine shop. In this event you are probably better off buying a new steering shaft ACS068.
