Today I completed another restoration project of a very sporty Nylint hot rod. Unlike the previous restorations I have completed, just for fun I completed a large degree of customized modifications to the toy car as I restored it.
There are several firsts for me during this project. The first time I did some real and extensive customization, the first time I used two-stage powder coating, and the first time I made many of the parts using custom molds and more or less hand machined metal parts. It was a lot of fun discovering how many common, and some not so common, items from around the home I was able to use as templates for making new part molds, and even directly as new parts for various custom modifications.
The new front bumper (and fuel tank supporter) is made of aluminum plate I hand machined. I used two lip balm shells as a mold template for casting a brand-new fuel tank. On the back of the car there was a hole for a tire, but I felt it would have been ugly to just hang an old spare tire there, so I used a keycap from my son's computer keyboard to mold and cast a new rear bumper. The windshield I hand made from transparent plastic plexiglass to which I added some pretty and realistic curvature. The transmission I molded using a wheel hub from a 1:18 scale model car, my daughter's mini coke cup toy, and a mini cutting tool as the mold template. The hot rod’s tires came from a 1:18 scale car model I had, and the engine I removed from another old plastic toy car we had laying around. It felt like working in a real garage building a real custom car from junk yard parts!
I think this restoration/customization project was very successful and turned out beautifully in the end. The two-stage coating I used was the very popular fantasy illusion red with a top coat called clear vision. The combination is incredible and even more dazzling and beautiful in the sunshine outdoors!
Thanks so much for watching and feel free to tell me what you think in the comments below.
