Those presses were crazy, 177.5 kilos and more, damn. The split snatch looks cool as well.

The squat technique is generally more efficient. However, it took years before lifters perfected it. As late as 1962, there were plenty of spitters around. By the late 1960s, few were left on the international stage. Rudy Pluckfelder of the Soviet Union, who won gold in Tokyo in 1964 (82K), might have been the last world champion who employed the split style in both the snatch and clean and jerk.

its such a bummer we dont use the split snatch anymore. you can still lift maximally that way, you just need good mobility like in all lifts.

The split style all but vanished from high level competition because the squat style is more efficient. The lifter doesn't have to pull the weight as high and you can get under the bar faster (by spit-seconds but those split-seconds can make or break a lift). The squat style of snatching took a while to perfect as one can see watching old videos like this one and then compare those lifters' rough form with the smooth form that so many top-notch lifters employ today. The split style still has its place, however, especially with aging lifters (competing in Masters contests) whose bodies are no longer suited to squatting.

@@markmiller9579 when soviets started to scout for kids to make weightlifters they would test test them and if they couldn't get into position for squat and weren't fkexible enough then they were changing sports, so lifters learned from a very young age to squat. Also world records were made by splitters even if their competitors were squaters. Also the split is more foegiving than the squat.

Some of those lifts would have received 3 red lights today for press-outs in the snatch and jerk. International judging has become ridiculously strict. A couple millimeters of "press-out" and it's No Lift.

in 62 there were good clear films and cameras. These films are terrible. Weren't there professionals filming this at that time.?
