Even though QB Rex Kern was a 2 time National Champion at Ohio State, when he went to the NFL he converted to a DB playing 3 years with the Colts and 1 year with the Buffalo Bills. He was teammates with OJ in Buffalo. After the 1974 NFL strike season he was out of football due to lingering back issues. On the flip side, Rex was very smart earning a Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree, and a PhD from Ohio State which he contributed to his success later in life. He also remained close friends with Woody Hayes who he had credited for keeping him educationally motivated.

I remember this game well. We had recently gotten our first color TV, a fancy console model with a HUGE (for those days) 25" screen and a built-in stereo AM/FM and phonograph, for just under $700. The US Gov inflation calculator says that's equal to around $5k in 2022 dollars. Yikes. With prices like that, it's no surprise that many families still had only black and white sets at that time. Those early color sets were very finicky, too. I remember a TV repairman having to make a house call at least a couple of times.

I was nine that year too, and I also remember this game well, but I had jumped on the bandwagon at the beginning of the season. Some neighborhood kids needed cannon fodder for their sandlot football games in the late summer of '68, and even though I was a couple of years younger than them and a good bit smaller, I was recruited. They must have been hard up for another warm body because I knew almost nothing about football at first, but I learned. That got me interested in football going into fall, and I started following the Buckeyes in what turned out to be a national championship year. Watching all of those Rose Bowls over the next ten years from the frozen tundra of Central Ohio must have had an effect on me, because I ended up retiring to SoCal. I still follow Ohio State, though.

It just hit me like a tidal wave of truth in the sea of synchronicity (what the hek does that mean ?) lol , It means *OJ Simpson* is not the big story here (imo) the real gem in this treasure trove of gridiron titans (oh boy) is Ohio States *safety's Mike Sensibaugh & Jack Tatum* = WOW & POW !

Back then it depended on which poll you chose to believe. There were many CFB polls in those days. Some polls still considered bowl games to be exhibition games, and they named their national champion at the end of the regular season before the bowls were played (which was the traditional way to do it in CFB). Other polls had by then switched to waiting until after the bowl games were played to name their NC. '68 was the first year for AP (sports writers) to wait until after the bowls to name their NC, and they picked Ohio State.

Ohio State in both polls and they deserved it. They didn't know it at the time, but that 50-burger they put up on a surprisingly decent Michigan team that year was the fuel that ignited the Ten Year War that was about to come. Neither team won any National Titles during that span (don't gimmie that 1970 garbage, you guys lost the Rose Bowl) but they were always ranked up there and both teams beat the crap out of each other physically in some REAL smash-mouth football.

I can't understand that call for the life of me. The Southern Cal guy didn't appear to catch the ball, and in any event, he was completely out of bounds.

The ref saw both players getting control of the ball at the same instant, if the Ohio State defender touched it first. And they said the Trojan receiver was inbounds by an inch when both nabbed the ball. Rule says if both teams catch it at the same moment, the catch is given to the offense. Imagine if the game had hinged on that play!

Brian what are you talking about? The USC receiver never ever had anything resembling possession and was waaaaaaaaay out of bounds. Horrible horrible call.
@TS-ev1bl

@@brianarbenz7206 Watch the play in slo-mo. It's very clear. The DB (#3) intercepted the ball with his feet in bounds and landed on his back out of bounds. The USC receiver, who was out of bounds the whole time, then took the ball away from the DB after the DB was on the ground a yard out of bounds. If they had replay like today it would have been ruled an INT, or I suppose it's possible they could say the DB didn't maintain possession all the way through to the ground, so incomplete pass. The one thing it was absolutely NOT was a TD catch. It's no wonder the DB (Sensibaugh) acted like he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

The whole feel of the telecast and the game, is different from today. Great play-by-play calling. Southern Cal's defense was fast-pursuing. Anytime Ohio State ran outside, there were bunches of Trojans waiting, or on the runner. I remember watching this game when I was 10.

Football has not changed hardly at all...except for goal posts with only one leg instead of 2 and the fact that there were no emotion sucking, boring , time consuming reviews by officials up in "the booth" & on the field.

If there had been replay officials back then, the final score would have been 27-10. USC's last touchdown was laughably bogus when viewed in slo-mo and would have been overruled.

More so in the first half, and one play in particular. Otherwise they kept him pretty well contained. In the second half he ran wild a few times with the ball laying on the ground behind him.

love how the refs are literally right there on top of the players right after the play is over to make sure it’s downed at the exact spot. today’s refs just sit back & casually jog in. perhaps that’s why there are so many issues.

68 Ohio State team averaged 33 points a game. 33 points would have been enough to beat Michigan in 69 and Stanford in '71 Rose. Ones that got away from many of these same players.
