Vintique Motors is thrilled to present this 1974 Harley-Davidson SR100 Baja!
With the dirt bike craze in full force in the early-1970s, Harley-Davidson, which was then under full ownership by AMF, could not pass the up the opportunity to compete in the market with one of their own. Having a 50% interest in Italian motorcycle producer Aermacchi, which specialized in small-displacement motorbikes, the SR100 Baja was conceived as Harley-Davidson's offering in the dirt bike market starting in 1970. The bike was entirely produced by Aermacchi and branded with Harley-Davidson logos for the American market.
The SR100 Baja was offered from 1970-1974 and for the final 1974 model year it was only offered in black with an American flag motif on both sides of the gas tank. It featured a 98cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine producing 12hp with kickstart ignition system and a five-speed manual transmission. It proved to be stylish and fun to ride as well as road legal and priced competitively, but it was no match for Honda's domination of the dirt bike market as just 1,396 were reportedly produced for the final 1974 model.
This example was purchased by famed Harley-Davidson dealer turned renown motorcycle collector, George Schott, on 10/1/2015 to join his extensive and impressive collection housed in Auburn, Maine. I purchased it from George on 5/31/2021 for the Vintique Motors private collection with 8-miles showing on the odometer. Its condition is astoundingly impressive, even still riding on what is believed are its original Pirelli tires with the front tire date coded the 27th week of 1971 and the rear tire date coded the 16th week of 1973. The bike has been fully serviced with an oil and filter change, carb adjustment, and fuel hoses replaced as incorrect hoses were installed. Do not miss this opportunity.
