Referee Sydney Lee was 4 times English Amateur Billiards Champion and in 1934 became a professional Snooker player. I saw Sydney playing a billiards exhibition about 1980 in a village hall in Limpsfield, Kent. I was about 16 years old and couldn't believe the fantastic trick shots that he played, great character, great memories. Graham Miles stance over the cue is very much like today's Gary Wilson. Left eye dominant but cue obviously runs straight and accurate.

Pot Black certainly helped put snooker on the map as a television sport. The World Championship was restored to it's Knock-out format the same year that Pot Black was first aired - 1969. Apart from the odd frame of the World Championship Final, Pot Black was pretty much the only snooker seen by the general public until the late 70's.

I was a Pot Black viewer back in the day growing up in New Zealand. I styled my cueing action from Graeme Miles where the cue was tucked under the left side of his jaw which meant his left eye was directly over the cue to sight down the cue to play his shots. To me I thought that was a very good technique. Great to see the Masters of yesteryear playing.

Naturally enough the "modern" viewer imbued with "modern" wisdom scoffs at this match. The great Syndey Lee shouts the scores as he was brought up calling the scores in non amplified rooms, and then Ted Lowes's charm is lost on the "modern" viewer whom seeks to find smut in a game of class. Morons the lot of 'em.
