As a Cowboy's fan during the 70's, the Steelers were the only team that I dreaded Dallas playing against. I remember being elated with their 1-4 start and thinking they're done for the year but panicked as they rolled through the rest of the season. That defense is the best I ever saw. I get so tired of hearing about the '85 Bears and their defense. They were a one hit wonder. Pittsburgh did it for almost an entire decade. As much as I lived and died with Dallas back then, I had a lot of respect for that defense.

The 76 Steelers were the best of the Steelers 70's team, they were at the peak of their powers. They won 2 back to back superbowls going into that season and they would win 2 more after the 76 season to end with 4 superbowls from 1974-1979. Their defensive stats for 1976 are unbelievable. However 1976 was also the best Oakland raider team of the decade as well. They went 13-1 and won their first superbowl which says so much about how great the raiders were that year to beat the best Steeler team of the 70's. They not only beat them in the playoffs but they beat them in the regular season as well. They were 2-0 against the 76 Steelers. The Raider/Steeler Rivalry was off the charts those years! I am a lifetime Steeler fan born in Pittsburgh and lived here all my life BUT the 1976 Raiders Do Not get enough credit about how great they really were and what they accomplished that year going 13-1 and winning the superbowl. I think the 76 Raiders could have beat the 72 Dolphins and the 85 bears, they were that good.

They never should have given away Preston Pearson who would have been a worthy replacement when both thousand yard rushers, Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier, went down. After Preston Pearson was given away he only scored 4 touchdowns in the '75 NFC championship game and stood up to Jack Lambert after Cliff Harris was dumped for patting Gerela's helmet after a missed field goal. If the had Preston Pearson who lost the '75 & '79 superbowls like he lost the '69 superbowl while on the Colts. But he also won the '77 superbowl with rhe Cowbys like he won in '74 with the Steelers. Noll should have kept Preston Pearson and they might have won 3 straight superbowls. And I don't want to get into how WR Roy Jefferson and LB Ray May went on t g e win the superbowl for the Colts in '70 and then both of them went into two of the better teams of the 70s. The Redskins and the Broncos on their way to becoming the Irange Crush. Oh well so not every move by the Steelers paid off 🤔🤨😉

They allowed fewer points and fewer yards per game. That Bears D isn't even the 2nd best of all time. Maybe 5th or 6th. Great overall team but a one hit wonder. I always wondered what happened to them the next year? You never heard from that team again. And its serious question. Do you know? I actually loved that Bears team. But by the way they got lucky that Miami choked in the AFC Title Game cuz they were gonna t off and the Bears Defense and beat em in the Superbowl. They scored 45 on them that season. Sorry but you can't have the greatest of all time and get 45 points scored on you in ANY game. The most the '76 Steeler team allowed, when they were healthy, was 24 points. If the 1976 Steelers had not suffered so many injuries on offense they would have beaten the Raiders and also beaten the Vikings in Super Bowl XI which would have given them three titles in a row and five titles in six seasons.

The rules don’t allow the defense to play defense. Did Turkey Jones even get a flag thrown against him when he took Bradshaw by the shoulder pads and threw him to the ground? If a defensive player hits a quarterback below the knees don’t they get a one game or three game suspension?

If the 60 Packers in their prime played the 70s Steelers in their prime, who would win?🤔
@DynomyteDewd91
5 жыл бұрын
Probably the 70s Steelers, the league was more competitive in the 70s than the 60s. However, it could go either way, the 60s Packers were that good. Lombardi kind of predicted the Steelers becoming a force in the 70s, I remember reading somewhere that Lombardi said, “Chuck Noll is building a team up there in a Pittsburgh, watch out for them in the coming years.”

Unless we are talking about who is better pound-for-pound, it's the 70s Steeler in a walk. Bigger, much stronger players in the 70s. The Steelers strength coach of that era reported that every Steeler could bench 300 lbs, and every o-lineman could bench 500 lbs. In the 60s, teams were still laboring under the wive's tale that weights are bad for you. The 60s Packers would get pushed up and down the field.

@@SeisanStnc The Steelers were the first team to hire a strength coach. The coach was a Olympic weightlifter and competed with Russians. There he learned about steroids and passed it on to some of the players. No one knew much about steroids at that time, but soon all the teams were experimenting. My dentist knew a Steeler front office guy, who told him that one of the players butt was so calloused, that he had trouble finding a spot for the needle. Not all the players used them, but the Steelers had some pretty impressive bench presses, for players at 250 lbs and manhandled a lot of teams in the early 70’s….

Steelers relaxed in season opener at Oakland in 4th qtr with a 28-14 lead with 5 minutes left in the game. Raiders scored 17 unanswered points. Bradshaw got hurt at Cleveland, they were flat at the Vikings, and allowed too many 2nd half points to the Patriots

About 18 years ago, my daughter’s softball team were playing in a state playoff game in Eastern Pa. Rumor was that Jack Lambert helped take care of the field, I said whatever. We pulled up to the field and There he was raking the pitchers mound !! All I could think was, holy shit that man could still be playing linebacker !!! We won, daughter pitched a great game, got his autograph after the game. Something we will both never forget !!!

I miss this style of football. The Steel Curtain wouldn’t survive in today’s “game”. Imagine one of today’s top teams having to play against that defense with the old style of game allowed. My money would be on the Steel Curtain. As soon as the QB got sacked a few times by Lambert, White, or Greene they would be throwing wild just so they wouldn’t get hit again.
