Smooth. Darn nice little motor. Glad I got one over 30 years ago. I used it and when I was done put it up. Last week poured gas in and it fired on the 1st pull and still runs great. About to do the water pump

They're nice little motors for a trolling motor, a backup, or canoe power. It would be nice to have one that didn't have a bunch of hours on it. These do tend to wear out since they get run wide open almost always. It sounds like you have a really nice one. Thanks for watching!

It’s a year after this comment but thought I’d chime in because of what’s mentioned. I picked up a ‘77 Evinrude 2 hp and the compression is 120! Didn’t expected that. I assume low hours. I’m doing a complete service top to bottom. Will barrel test today. Yep, great motors.

@@oldjohnnyrude8404 ... The way I look at it, these motors are meant to go slow to make the tip of your pole to bounce correctly when pulling your rapala lure close to the lilliepades.

Really cool little thing but I definitely couldn’t use it on the Shannon river in Ireland. I think under normal conditions it would need to run around 6mph minimum with the boat loaded to get back upstream against the current . So many of the little hire boats have 5 and 6 hp motors and they struggle at the best of times . Right now the river has been near record levels for weeks so it’s not really even advisable to use a small motor
@oldjohnnyrude8404

For sure this is no river motor. On a river in any area with a decent current, I am.not comfortable with any less than a 10hp motor myself. This one is nice for small inland lakes in nice conditions. It makes a nice little backup to take along on the lake. It's pretty cool but not particularly gutsy. These were surprisingly strong for their size and weight when new. The re-rated ones were 1.2hp when rated at the prop. They are only about 17lbs though. Thanks for watching!

Old JohnnyRude thanks for the reply. Yeah the smallest motor I ran on that river was a 2006 Yamaha 15 4 stroke on a 15ft aluminium boat . Went well with just me, at 30kg tractor weight in the front and a bit of gear and was OK with 3 guys and gear but not getting anywhere fast . You’re right a nice old style compact one like that would be a good backup or to use for cheap quiet running on a calm small lake

That sounds like a fuel delivery problem. I would start by thoroughly cleaning and rebuilding the carburetor. Check the fuel flow from the tank while the carburetor is off. Good luck. They're neat little motors. They're not really built for heavy use, but they're great little backup kickers and canoe motors. Thanks for watching!

Yes, that's normal. It puts more of a load on the motor and slows it down. Thanks for watching!

@oldjohnnyrude8404

It could be the float, it could be the fuel line, maybe a filter, maybe the tank is not venting properly? It could also be losing spark. Definitely look everything over good and bring some oars if it is doing that. Thanks for watching!

I’ve got a 1977 evinrude 2hp that’s running hot. I took the bottom leg off and attached a battery drill to the spline shaft and span it up, the pumps moving water but not much. What sort of flow and pressure is needed? I also attached a hose to the internal copper pipe and water ran back into the leg at the very top. Any tips for me? You’re engine is running sweet by comparison.

You probably at least need a new impeller. These motors use the gearcase casting as the impeller housing. That part is not replaceable without changing the gearcase itself. The cap can be replaced and will probably help the pump's efficiency, but the houseing can get worn the point it will not pump effectively anymore. It usually will last about as long as the powerhead though. These often get run at WOT all the time and they get worn out. The lower crank seal assembly also can fail and stop the engine from running altogether. If the engine runs OK it is certainly worth trying a new impeller. It sounds like water is flowing through the powerhead OK with a hose attached. Thanks for watching!

The Johnson/Evinrude 2 HP outboards are notorious for overheating. Replacing the impeller may NOT solve the problem. There is a water pump retrofit-kit that can be purchased that will fix it.

when you re seal the gear case do you allways buy the pre made paper gasket. or do you use the liquid gasket .the stuff thats like a toothpaste bottle that you squirt arround the housing?
@oldjohnnyrude8404

Corbin Larson, I like to use the fiber gaskets whenever possible. The sealant that gets squirted on is too easy to block small passages with and you never know until after you have assembled it. The fiber gaskets are less messy when it's time to replace them also.

Location and condition mean everything. That said, $375 is a lot for one of these motors even in really nice shape in my area. $250-$300 maybe in top shape around here. Newer models and excellent cosmetic condition may bring a bit more. Thanks for watching!

@oldjohnnyrude8404

They're neat little motors. Very light weight. It would be OK to take a chance on one for 65 bucks even if it didn't run. These are often worn out because they're run at full throttle for long periods of time, all the time typically. The lower crankshaft bearing and seal assembly is sometimes no good. If that seal fails it will not have enough crankcase compression to run. That part is expensive and hard to come by. I have not tried to repair one with aftermarket parts that needs that seal replacement. I have one with that problem so I will eventually do it. They are pretty simple, kind of cheaply made motors. Not terribly difficult to work on. Just don't pay too much unless you can see one of these run. Thanks for watching!
