The '78 Nova was a great car! I bought mine back in 1978, brand new. It was a reliable car that was cheap to maintain. It was very easy to work on yourself. I'm no mechanic but equipped with a Chilton's repair manual, I was able to do most the work myself. It never needed much other than oil changes and tune-ups, which were easy to do. I even did the brake work myself! The car had a 250 6-cylinder and got over 20 mpg on the highway. The car was frugal to drive, but had plenty of room in it to be comfortable. It was called a compact car back then, but by today's standards, it would be at least a mid-size. 8 years and 140,000 miles later, the car finally died. That may not seem like much now, but back then, any car that went more than 100k on routine maintenance, it was a big deal.

My dad had a 1978 Chevy Concours assembled in Mexico City. Six-cylinder engine, 250. 3-speed manual gearbox at the wheel your video reminded me of those great cars that GM produced. Robust, reliable and easy to repair

My mom had a 1972 Chevy Nova that she bought brand new. Her's was white with blue vinyl interior with the inline 6-cylinder. She made a number of long road trips meaning 600 miles round-trips.

I loved that generation of Nova. Glad she bought the 72. After that the smog regulations of 1973 totally killed performance and mileage. Thanks for your comments.

I just bought a 71 4 door nova with its original 6 cyl from the junk yard I work at. It's been sitting so long it still has bias ply tires on it. I thought about putting a v8 and manual Trans in it, but it's to original so I will likely fix it up and keep the 6 cyl

Enjoy your Nova. I’m amazed it has the original tires. Make sure you change them right away before you drive it. Sedans are worth less than the coups so be careful how much you invest. They a blast to drive and Novas handle well for the period compared to other cars.

They must’ve had the nova custom or the concourse. They were very dressed up and luxurious especially starting in 1975. Actually the Cadillac Seville when it came out in 1976 was a stretched Nova with many improvements for quietness and ride.

I remember the Oldsmobile Omega very well. Different engine options than the nova except for the six cylinder. Later on they used the old 231 Cubic V6 that shook like crazy not well counter balanced that GM bought back from AMC Buick also used that motor for a while. Buick and Oldsmobile had very durable V8’s that were also offered. You are absolutely correct they really are the same car except for spring rates and a few trim pieces. And a little sheet middle modification.

@@thecaradvisorclassics As for my Omega; pros were it had only 7,400 miles when I got it in 1986, it belonged to my dad's aunt. Cons were there was a lot of rust, paint was oxidized, later in years water got inside the car whenever it rained. Finally had to get rid of it after a while.

@@gsnfan My 1977 Nova I had in high school leaned inside also when it rained. 😂 lol. I’m lucky to be able to garage the car as well as the previous owner. Sorry you had to get rid of yours. Rustproofing in those days and quality control not do good on some. But if you got a good one they can last almost for ever. This one is much better than the one I had in high school. Quality wise.

That's not how I start my Rochester carbureted vehicles on a cold start turn key on pump 2 or 3 pedals of gas then engage starter I don't crank more than 4 times before I give more gas...they start every time like that and I live in northern alberta canada
@thecaradvisorclassics

I totally understand and do agree with you. However sometimes my car is not started for months at a time or weeks at a time. If you need to crank it no more than four times it is allowing the cylinders to get enough oil splashed in them not to cause damage after Sitting for an extended period of time. They should be driven and started once a week but I’m not always able to. Thank you for your comments. It does get extremely cold where you live.

@@thecaradvisorclassics The car you have in the video is sharp and I’m glad to see that it’s cared for. I love to see old cars like this on the street! However, I disagree with “priming the engine” before starting it. From a former mechanic, it’s not necessary. If that were my car, I’d just set the choke (probably 2 pumps of the gas) and start it. With no disrespect to anyone, it should not take several attempts to start a carbureted engine if it’s maintained and serviced. The comment about the “oil getting to cylinders” to me is a moot point. Doesn’t a top end lubricant (marvel mystery oil) eliminate this? Just curious. Take care of that beautiful car…

I wish I could help you with that. Maybe your local auto parts store can give you some advice on how to fix it. You may need a new one or there could be a grounding issue, or getting power to the starter. Best of luck. Never give up on A Nova they’re great cars.

Nice car; you should start it every couple weeks and let it run for about 20 minutes or so, and move it up and down the driveway. The reason I say this is so you don’t have to “prime” the engine. There is no reason why a vehicle can’t start on the first crank, period.
