Puente Hills Mall -- 50th Anniversary
Rowland Heights, CA flyover from 1980 aerial images.

Puente Hills Mall, as it appeared here in November 1980, was opened in segments starting in Spring 1974. However, the four anchor stores and scores of original tenants were certainly thriving in the bustling new climate-controlled shopping environment 6 years later. It was also a convenient transportation hub for the local RTD (Rapid Transit District) public bus service, making access easy for those not old enough to drive.
(Freedom on the 482!)
My family made our very first visit shortly after it began opening; walking inside the foyer through the upstairs Sears parking entrance, I was immediately captivated by the large glass link chandelier hanging down to the first floor.
A new song I'd never heard before started playing over the sound system, "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede. Never to be forgotten!
The original 1974/1975 anchor stores:
The Broadway
J.W. Robinson's
Sears
JC Penney
Who remembers some of these other early stores?
Musicland
Karl's Toy Store
Lamp Land
B. Dalton Bookstore
Spencer Gifts
Miller's Outpost Western Wear
And many, many others.
The surrounding neighborhood was expanding quickly, as can be seen by the many large construction projects visible across the landscape.
This flyover is dedicated to those who remember the view from long ago.
As always, there are a few labels scattered throughout the scenery to assist with locating significant landmarks.
