Ax was awesome. I remember when the Jets started 10-1 in '86 he was not impressed. "Lookin' at their schedule, I'm not sure they're gonna win another game this year". Either he was right or they only won one more. RIP to one of the best.

Dumb Question? How come NBC to replace Byrant Gumbel(who just got promoted to the "NBC Today Show" as Co-Anchor) did not immediately just hire a then "kid" & rising star named Bob Costas to be the main NFL Studio Host job? Len Berman I know very well from watching as a legendary and long time NYC Sports Anchor. Len who took over the WNBC Sports Anchor Chair after Marv Albert permanently left the Local NYC station to focus on the NY Knicks and also the NFL and Boxing full time for the rest of the '80's for NBC. Marv would be the voice for the NBA On NBC of course when they had the TV contract from 1991-2002.(Not counting the suspension that Albert had that he missed the 1998 NBA Finals,) However Len just was seemed not a good fit in this high profile sports broadcasting job. At start of his career Berman was most famous as the Boston Celtics TV Announcer in the 70's. FYI Berman was at WNBC-TV until basically a forced "retirement' in 2009. Still around in 2020 co-hosting a local NYC morning radio show on a news talk station if anyone cares.

Maybe NBC felt Bob Costas was still a little too green for the job at that point (Bob was only 30 by then). Costas was still a couple of years away from the game that got much of NBC's attention when he called what became known as the Ryne Sandburg game

@@robfloyd7389 Was only 4 years old in the fall of 1976 so don't really know. That was the season where the Pats had 11 victories but only got the then only AFC wild card? And that Browns, Bengals and Broncos all won 10 games but none made the post season in a year that then Bucs and Seahawks both joined the league? Probably in my crib dancing to The Bee Gees lol.

@@hrtvfan2870 I did see that Sanberg game. Not only it helped Costas career, it also probably played a huge role in the growth of the Cubs Phenomenon i.e the 1908 Drought to millions that help to create many new Cubbie fans to the rest of America and even worldwide as well do doubt.

Also notice in this highlight show that this is probably the first time in '82, that NBC or any sports network using their network "bug" or logo during a sporting even even though its' just highlights. Now I personally hate the station/network "bug" or logo on all the time on all televised sporting events worldwide.

"But then again when you're playing the New England Patriots, you're supposed to get a little help, Len" Ax shared the total disdain and disrespect (and ignorance) of the Patriots by the media, fans, opponents and the league which radicalized Dreith, who then was instrumental in perpetuating it. Goodell and his minions/henchmen have been in control since '07, stealing three first round draft picks (so far) perpetrating a competitive disadvantage that is unique in sports.
