When Coryell came to the Chargers five games into the 1978 season, the Chargers would lose three of their last four before winning seven of their last eight, finishing with a 9-7 record, went 12-4 in 1979 winning the AFC West in his first full year, went 11-5 in 1980 repeating their AFC West title, finished 10-6 in 1981, three-peating the AFC West title, and in the strike-shortened 1982 season went 6-3 with a playoff spot.

That seems to be a thing with TV announcers, they pick a narrative and keep plugging it, even when the results of the game don't bear it out, and when they finally adapt the narrative to fit the reality, it's rephrased as how surprising or shocking what it actually taking place is. You would not know the way they are talking about this one, that it's a game between the Super Bowl champion and a 5th place finisher, whose last winning season was with a strike, and who, as they finally mention during the game, is on a six game road losing streak. Sports media always has their favoritism and an inclination to embrace the novelties. Never mind that teams in this era generally racked up large passing yardage totals because they were playing from behind and facing prevent defenses.
