Nice one! I've been slowly getting my raider in shape. I got it about 9 months ago with a bad transmission in it and another bad transmission in the back. I rebuilt the transmission myself and have been picking away at different projects since. Hard sometimes because it's my daily driver... New leaf spring bushings and swaybar bushings made a HUGE difference in the ride. Anyway thanks for sharing all the good information for the rest of us.

OMG!!! It's alive, finally it's alive... what a nice ride. I got one for myself around 5 months ago but the previous owners didn't take care of it like they should. Looking forward to replace the Nissan J15 carb for a better one, and hopefully get someone to work on the interior since I have no clue how to use a sewing machine. For the time being I have to work on it slowly with the little tools and time I have, I only know basic mechanics so there is no way it will be as nice as yours but for sure I will rewatch all the vids to see what I can do by myself. Congrats again, that's a car you will never get tire of drive, and if you do, you can always store it and survive and armagedon on it.

@@anthonywatkins Looking forward to the next episode. BTW, can you do some fuel comsumption tests when you finish the car? I need some help with mine since it's doing 4.8 MPG. It's the same engine 2.6L but with a manual transmision. It have a Nissan J15 carb, no fuel leaks, new air filter, the engine sounds great and pulls ok but damn, with that millage I could run a V8.
@anthonywatkins

@@xxdjticoxx Yeah that seems way low for MPG...I'm expecting to get about 12 around town, we'll see. 4.8 MPG? Carb might be too rich, check for black spark plugs. Or hook up a meter to your oxygen sensor and see what your millivolts are...Then check cylinder compressions. Then check to see if you're towing a trailer...

Working on the ridiculous fuel consumption but there is no way to tune it within the proper limits. Getting now around 9 MPG. I'm thinking on getting a new carburetor since the rebuild kit I got for mine didn't fit right on some of the replacements, sadly for me, shitty Datsun J15 carburetors is all I can get here or pay 49% import taxes for a $400 Weber. Mixture limits gets me 95 milivolts and 375 milivolts all the way open and all the way closed. The engine runs and sounds alright when set on around 350 mV. I took the carburetor apart and replace most of the seals, o-rings,valves and cleaned everything up. The engine doesn't stall with the fuel mixture all the way closed (not sure if it's normal). Most of my older cars were less than 2.0l engines and they did go off a soon as the mixture was shut all the way, so I'm thinking my issues are around there. I will keep working on that end and update the results here in case anyone else turns over with a similar issue.

@anthonywatkins

Yeah I should have recorded the light issue, just started started fixing it and had it done before I thought about the camera. The light has 2 grounds and a hot lead. the hot lead is always hot, so you can test it anytime. One ground is connected to the door switch, the other to the body. Mine was missing the hot lead to the bulb, it fell off.

I had an '88, bought it new, put about 190k on it. Unfortunately the trans (manual) had the bushings issue, started popping out of first gear. Drove it without first for almost two years until I eventually killed the clutch (original) and had no cash to fix the trans. I regretted getting rid of it for sure. It was stone reliable aside from that trans issue and I had it over the axles many times in mud. Awesome to see your project vids.

Hey man, I had an '87 that I bought from a buddy back in '93...It had a 5-speed which broke twice, 5th gear went out and the 1st gear slip too. Kind of interested to see how this automatic handles.
@kingsqueak2221
5 жыл бұрын
@@anthonywatkins Yeah I think the auto is a smart move. I was told the manuals had some sort of soft bronze stop bushings that cause them to pop out of gear, was a definite known issue and failure mode.

I just rebuilt my 5 speed for my '88 raider, it's not too difficult. I don't know what the bronze bushings issue would be, although I've heard about these transmissions going bad a lot too. Mine just had some cracked bearings. Now I just need to rebuild my spare...

If you ever come across an old Cadillac in a junk yard, grab its horns and transplant them in place of the stock ones. Big improvement. Did you ever get around to replacing the leaf spring and shackle bushings? Luso Overland carries the Poly Tuff brand - good stuff. I like to use Noico (half the price of Hush Mat, DynaMat, etc.) inside doors and behind speakers to substantially cut down on the "tinny" sounds. Lucky you have an 88+. Those fit 6.5" speakers in the mid panel boxes, whereas the earlier versions are limited to 5.25" without cutting metal. All years are pre-drilled for 5.25" in the front doors. The in-dash speakers are bigger in 88+, too. The earlier ones have no real replacement options and are best hooked up to a comm radio or something. Love this series and I hope to meet you one day. Great job!

I have a n 88 dodge raider 2.6 auto transmission. The driversider of the engine block has letter s to the right of motor mount. I also have a core engine model g54b like the 2.6 in the 88 raider with auto trans. Only difference is its engine block has a stamp PIII on right side of motor mount drivers side. This core engine matched to a raider with a manual trans 2.6 at junkyard. My question is can I use that stamped PIII motor for a rebuild for the auto trans engine stampes with an 's'? Us dodge raider fans lucky to have the availability of Tony's skills to encourage.

Hey man, yes both engines should be interchangeable, not sure what the markings mean...you could try to research them. Possible the cranks are different. Some auto makers have different cranks for auto vs manual...in which case the manual crank would work for an auto, but not the other way around. (you'ld have to cut the input shaft on the manual trans)
