Sort of. They were introduced in late December 1989 so you can count 89 but there was only a handful of car so the years of production were really 90,91,92,93 then part of 94. So let say almost 5 years!

Definitively my favorite generation 911. Having owned 4 964’s and driven maybe 20 different cars over the years, I feel like they fit me like a glove. Besides, the 964Turbo I recently sold, were the king of the showrooms back in 1991 when I got my driving license, so I’ll forever be connected to these lovely small cars. I reckon I’ll find a way to get another one into my garage before long. Actually strange not having one after all these years. Only downside is high maintenance as I’m a little OCD in keeping them absolutely spotless and their mechanicals in pristine condition. That can be a little exhausting when parts are not always easy to come by and specialist shops are 2 days drive away. My favorite thus far: 1990 C2 Convertible with the FVD 300hp kit and cup exhaust. Actually all my Carreras have been in this configuration and put down a much more significant sound and acceleration above 4500rpm than you got from this example Nick. If you get the Race kit instead of the Street kit, you actually elevate max rpm by 400, to 7200rpm and the initial rush at 4500 is superseded by a champagne “POP” at 5500 than runs like crazy all the way to 7200. A little known party-trick is to mix 30% of E85 into the Shell V-Power98/99. KABOOOM, and another 50hp can be felt by the “butt-o-meter". That is, if you have the Race version of the LB2-300 kit. Complete that with a RS-LWFW, cup exhaust, 100-cell sport cat, RS clutch, PSS10 suspension and a strut bar, you’ve got yourself a kick-ass Magnus Walker killing Outlaw 964.

Hey Nick, love the video 👍 Totally agree, "when it comes to Porsche, less is more": On the road, the simple sloping back and classic 911 silhouette are so much more appealing, than the bespoilered Motorsport wannabe look - at least in my opinion. I had one of these from nearly new in 1993. It was a red Carrera 4 and I loved it. Hard as nails, lovely to drive in and out of London every day. Solid and never had to worry about it being a soft touch. Excellent fuel economy too. The only issue for me was the offset driving position. You say light but the C4 was heavy as ----. Also in Europe the standard wheel was different to your mate's wheels as were the mirrors, which were the square flat jobbies.

So, why is it I never want a particular car until Nick drives one on his channel? Probably because I’m “solid 5 out of 10”, and I have the brains and will power to prove it. Now I want a 964, after spending so much time being judgemental about the skyrocketing prices of air cooled Porsches. Oh I guess it’s ok, I wanted a GT3 just last week after watching AutoAmatuer review one. Sorry Nick, I think I am driving your target audience quality down. Maybe I should buy the “solid 4 out of 10” shirt instead.

Just curious, have a beautiful 964 that I garage away from the house, but sometimes it just gets caught in the rain for a few days. A lot of people say not to cover the car outside however I have a custom fit cover that doesn’t seem to leave moisture underneath and protects from sun damage/ birds etc, soft inside. I do try to take off when there is no sign of rain What are thoughts on car covers for a 1990 Porsche?

True. But a lot of us just can’t get excited about the increasing size and complexity of the newer Porsches, Ferraris, etc. The 911-964 were classically simple and feel like sports cars. The 864 is likely the most modern “vintage” car you can buy. A/c works fine, brakes are great, and it’s properly loud. I suspect this is more than a nostalgia cycle.

Yes, they are a fun air cooled 911, but the faults are readily apparent: Maintenance costs are high...even if you do your own work. Performace is meager...a modern minivan or Camry will out pace you. The cost of ownership will outweigh the thrills.

A classic thing of beauty. Yes they (and 993) were made in small numbers but they were over engineered, had the "hewn from Granite" build quality so lacking on modern Porsche with their IMS/bore score fiasco & VW/Audi Group electrics/mechanicals behind the evolved shape.

Got a 964 a few years ago from an older mechanic. Made sense because it was much cheaper than a used ‘08 997 was going to cost after my lease was up. It’s quirkier, slower and raspier than the more sophisticated 997. I’ll drive it however until I’m physically no longer able. 964s really have their own beautiful souls.
