There's just a coziness about 90s and early 2000s cars that even the most luxurious cars now can't fill. They are usually by no means luxurious, but yet they're so inviting and bring a nostalgia that you might not even have.

That is the car I wanted back in high school. The exact same color and everything. Thanks for showing it for us again and thanks to the owner for sharing it. As for the transmission, after all these years I would expect all the failure points to be discovered and aftermarket parts built to strengthen it up.

It's been a passion project of mine since I was 14 years old to keep as many K and K based cars on the road as possible. This thing was junkyard ready and we did a TON of work to it to make it good again. Plus, my buddy is trying to raise money for a down payment on a house and I want to pay off some credit card debt so we can't keep everything.

If I recall, the hood bulge accommodated the timing pulleys in the earlier turbo models and probably was carried over to the V6s as a visual performance identifier. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, because the 80s were a long time ago.
@doug6191

A very obvious answer, especially considering he mentioned the other engines. Dodge just didn't make different hoods because of cost savings.
@landonbenford8369

I also could be wrong, but I thought I read in another of Zach's reviews that Chrysler was expecting to sell more turbos so whoever made those turbo hoods did what they were told and made a few too many and had a glut of them.
@cafn8ed74

@@doug6191 it didn't seem obvious when he mentioned how there was a hood bulge but nothing under it. That was the reason for my comment. They did have a flat hood with no bulge for the base models, FYI.

There were constant improvements over the years. By 1994 they were much better than when they first came out in 1987. The top V6 trim was almost like a luxury car. Smooth, powerful, and had a nice ride.

When I lived in West Central Illinois, I had a 92 Shadow Convertible just exactly like this one. I had to look back at some of my photos to compare the cladding on the bottom of the passenger door to make sure it wasn't my old one. My cladding had waves in it like this drivers door does. Great little car with LOTS of power. We did replace the tranny also, and it also had the top end worked on. (it had the soft valve seals that always went bad)

When Chrysler introduced their updated minivans for 1991, they also introduced a new unreliable transmission. Chrysler should have tested them before leasing them. They had unreliable transmissions in the 1990s. Chrysler had patterned with Mistubishi for the engines

Neon convertible roadster concept was labeled the Copperhead, aka Baby Viper. I was so crushed when it never materialized!! BTW, the ACR Neons were basically a track ready autocross monster and still virtually unknown. Would our corner a Vette or Miata easily!! I owned a 97 ACR sedan. Keep up the great work Zack!! Just double check your Internet facts. Sometimes I snicker. 😊😉

If memory serves me right, I think there was an article on the old Allpar site that explained that incorrect ATF was the primary cause of all those transmission failures. Apparently some models had the wrong fluid listed in the owner's manual, even, and it wasn't corrected for a while. Supposedly the transmissions were fine if you change the fluid regularly and used the correct fluid to do so. I don't know how accurate that is, since I have personal experience with a 1996 Grand Caravan that was on its third transmission before 100k, but there you go.

These cars didn't last very long. The engine started smoking with barely 60k miles and transmissions went out 10k miles after that. The ones that lasted were the four cylinders with the manual transmissions. But those were rare in convertible..

If these were taken care of, they could last a while with a bit of luck. They really did not hold up to being beat on hard over and over well or any type of performance minded driving. Just putting around town though or strictly 55mph road trips? These COULD hold up to. When you really think about it, isn't that all that can be asked of it? 280k is amazing!!
