In an interview, Paul Page stated that the "Delta Force" intros were completely written and produced by himself and a senior ABC production manager, and that compiling them took hours. It shows, as they are masterpieces. IMO, this is the finest of them all. The closing line "The challenge of the Brickyard begins again; there are 500 miles to go." is just poetry.

About the best, I will respectfully disagree. I love the thematic ones for Mario in 94 and the centennial of the American automobile industry in 95. Ah, who am I kidding? All of them gives me goosebumps, even the one for the first nascar race in Indy (94)

I loved that music they used for the intro, it's from the movie "Delta Force." They first used it on the 1988 Indy 500 intro, then for many years after that.

I never saw my grandad cry.....the year AJ retired I saw tears.....he watched him at Langhorne, Reading and Trenton. It was the end of an Era. He got to see me run my first race, and win my first race....I saw the same tears that day. My grandad took the checkered flag but I know he is waiting in victory lane for me.....someday I'll pull in, and he will be there.

I know I've got nothing on those people that go to the Indy 500 year after year, but this year I went to my first Indy. I hope that everybody that appreciates this video would go to that race at least once. From the military flyover to taps to "Back Home Again In Indiana" to "...Gentlemen Start Your Engines" and then to have my seats on the straightaway just past turn 4 and witness the start.....talk about emotional! I'll never forget it!

This one really is emotional. Watching AJ make his final lap was difficult, very sad. I was only 5 then, and appreciate this. This brings back some great memories. I never realized how much I would miss these great intros, or that the intros would become so terrible today. Thank you very much champcar4ever for posting these gems.

Paul Page, Al Unser and Sam Posey were the best announcers for the 500. Nobody else could make you feel and understand the importance of the race. I hope Page comes back one day. He'll be on the IMS radio network in 09, I'm looking forward to hearing his voice. 8 days to go

THIS was the glories of Indy that withstood the Formula One'ization of CART in the early 1990s. Indy was actually still incredibly interesting...because it was still the Races at the same Grand Ole' Track of the past...now 99 years, this August.

Tony also reunited the two series. I think he learned his lesson that he had been "had" by NASCAR and F1 who both advised him to split CART. Now we have a unified series and sure the 1990's of the CART well never be replaced but maybe its not fair to compare then to now. We should support the racers of today no matter what the situation is. That is Indycar that is American open wheel thats just American. Corny yes but its true.

Good timing! I wrote that post like 9 months ago. What did I get in today's mail? My ticket for this years Indy 500 (only my 2nd), but I'm glad to be sitting in Section H again, but this time (I think) on the top row... I'm glad because I should be able to see turn 3, the short chute and turn 4 better than last year. What did you think about Vitor Meira's pass of Scott Dixon last year on one of the restarts going into turn 1? That one I had to watch on one of the screens, but it was sure gutsy.

No. The Championship-class of American Formula Racing belongs to the ghosts that haunt it. Harroun, Goux, DePalma, Murphy, Lockhart, Meyer, Shaw, Rose, Vukovich, Ward, Clark ... the list is far from complete, but telling. Names left off like Foyt are still alive to remember things as they were. Fans may fill the grandstands, but Clark once said it well: if the tracks were deserted of everyone save the competitors and the races themselves, it would have been his heaven.

Your right. ABC-TV's intros use to be so classy and dignified, now it's so pretentious with lasers, sound effects and bizarre graphics. After all those legends (Foyt, Unser Sr., Mario Andretti, Mears)retired and then the CART split, Indy was getting back to having some (at least) popular names, and what happens? Franchitti and Hornish sell-out!
