In this Minidocumentary, the historic 1995 hurricane season is discussed from the perspective of a young weather enthusiast growing up in the eastern Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. That year, two hurricanes brought especially devastating damage to the region: 1) Hurricane LUIS, a large Category 4 storm ripped through the Northern Leeward Islands on September 5th with 130mph sustained winds. 2) Just 10 days later, a tiny but ferocious and rapidly-intensifying Hurricane MARILYN devastated the US Virgin Islands, and the Puerto Rican island municipalities of Culebra and Vieques with an official estimate of 110mph. In this video I argue that Marilyn was a solid Category 3 hurricane and perhaps stronger, with a most likely intensity of 120-125mph based on satellite estimates, hurricane hunter data, and the extreme damage inflicted over St Thomas and Culebra.
The 1995 hurricane season marked the beginning of me tracking every storm that I could, something that expanded to other basins as well. Eventually I began doing hurricane chasing as well, and got my PhD in Atmospheric Science. It can be said that 1995 helped to shape my life going forward. I hope that you enjoy this Minidocumentary!
Wind footage in San Juan, PR during Hurricane LUIS was filmed by legendary storm chaser, Jim Leonard. Check his awesome channel here! @cyclonejimcom
