Redshirt freshman Chad Hutchinson quarterback engineered a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter to give Stanford a 21-20 victory over UCLA at the Rose Bowl, the first of five straight wins by the Cardinal to end their 1996 season.
With :58 left in the game, Hutchinson found wide receiver Brian Manning for a 10-yard touchdown, and kicker Kevin Miller added the extra point to give Stanford a one-point lead. The true star of the game, however, was redshirt freshman receiver Troy Walters, who caught eight passes for 144 yards and a touchdown in what was a breakout game for him. Walters would go on to break numerous Stanford and Pac-10 records during his career, which was capped by the 1999 Fred Biletnikoff Award for the nation's top receiver.
