Following a sloppy first half, the Stanford Cardinal scored 17 unanswered points in the second half to defeat the visiting USC Trojans 24-20 in 1996.
USC had one final chance to win the game, but quarterback Brad Otton's Hail Mary was intercepted in the end zone by safety Tim Smith, who three years later would once again intercept a pass to preserve a win against the Trojans.
Stanford's win against USC came one week after they had defeated UCLA 21-20. The Cardinal ended the 1996 season on a five-game win streak that also includes victories against Washington State, Cal, and Michigan State.
