Been listening to this for decades. Brilliant song from my favourite band. 🙂

This is from the 1976 album A New World Record which is one of their best, if you like ELO you're in for a treat.

Great song, Sue ! .. Right up there with my very favourites from ELO ( along with "Telephone Line", "Confusion", and "Can't Get It Out Of My Head") .. Brilliant mix of rock and opera .. Like you, I loved Mary Thomas's vocal contribution .. And yes, it was a big hit here in Melbourne, Australia, along with "Telephone Line" and "Living Thing" from the same classic album, "A New World's Record".

I agree, Wayne! This is a fantastic song....a mini pop symphony. Did Mary ever appear in any of their other stuff? ELO is such an incredible band. You mentioned some other good ones...such talent 🤩💜

Love your take on this Sue as someone looking from the "colonies"💜😉 that didn't hear much of it. A real underrated band a "modern progrock" band for the 70s, leaving many of their contemporaries behind, vast and varied inspirations, that inspired many mid 70s outfits. They were massive in the UK, faves include telephone line, Mr Blue sky (of course)

Anybody else notice that when they mention Beethoven in the chorus, you get the chords for his 5th symphony??

New subscriber, enjoyed your reaction 👍. Yes it was a hit in the UK (#8 I think) but a different track off the same album - A New World Record - was released in different geographies- Do Ya. You may want to react to that one too. A couple of other tracks off the album worthy of a reaction are Tightrope and Shangri-La.

Hi Sue, great reaction! I had the original LP with Mary's "Oops". lol This song is awesome! You should next react to (or do a review of, if you've already heard it) the opening track from this album, the song called, *"Tightrope".* It's such an incredible tune, I call it the quintessential ELO song!

I prefer the live versions with Kelly Groucutt the bass player singing the operatic parts which he did when the band was on tour as well sharing lead vocals with Jeff Lynne...

The problem with this number was that it came out about 5 months AFTER the album in spring 1977. Album was out and forgotten. Whole Europe was in at disco and (old) country so it failed the charts. First single of the album was btw livin' thing. All albums before this where very good and may I suggest "10538 Ouverture from the album Electric Light Orchestra #1 ( known as No Answer in America) After this album the only good album was Out of the Blue ( behind you) and "Time" from 1981. El Dorado is my most favourite. I am from the Netherlands as you can see in my name :)

@@nollypra2752 It was the best song on the album but they brought livin' thing as the single in november. That should have been Rockaria. Btw on the CD remaster there is another song thats called surrender. That is really a good song but in fact that was a new song with old recordings. Just like Lynn did with the Beatles songs after the split and the dead of John. Rockaria was in the Netherlands 4 weeks with a peek of 28 ( out of 40 ) Bonus tracks on A New World record are four instrumentals ( Tighrope, Above the clouds, So fine and telephone line. And telephone line with a diff voice. When Jeff hit America the songs ere getting worse but that is my opinion. But that was a problem with ALL UK artists that went overthere. Big money but songs .......???????........
