The screwdriver is F(red) C. Ehinger Patent 01192177 Patented July 25th 1916. What a fantastic pair of screwdrivers and well-deserving of a bit of work!!! Hopefully, that water in the basement didn't cause too much damage.

I was lucky in that my house has a poured concrete basement. The only place water could get in was down the chimneys. The rain gauge showed 5" of water after the downpour. My previous house, that was built in 1891, has a laid stone Michigan basement under the oldest part of the house. Water came in all the time.

I look at it like it’s training. When an emergency happens and you have to scramble to assemble a pump and a hose, it’s good to have all the things necessary and the tools and the wherewithal to implement it. It’s how we make use of the combined toolset that we assemble in life, and why it’s good to keep expanding your experience. Just the day before Ida got here, my wife saw a leak in the bathroom by the toilet and I see it’s from the fill for the toilet and I get a wrench to tighten the nut at the base of the tank and the nut is plastic and it shatters and water is gushing everywhere! I quickly turn off the valve at the bottom, but a few gallons of water got out and start leaking in the basement. I remember that I bought a flexible toilet line and had it in the garage and I was able to fix everything without needing to go to the store. I remember arguing with her about buying the extra flex line, because she felt it’s not necessary. But in my mind, I like the peace of mind knowing I have it!
@OldSneelock
2 жыл бұрын
Glad you were ready with the fix. Having a spare, if possible, is always good. Plastic fittings are the pits. The braided metal flexible lines with the metal fittings are much better. You experienced some,good training, as the military says. I was fortunate that I spent 10 years fixing other peoples problems before I wentinto engineering. So most of my Training experiences have been at their expense. I don't touch a water line repair without turning off the water and draining the system. A quick flush and holding down the handle will empty most of the water in the toilet tank. A wet dry vac will remove the rest and is a great thing to have ready just in case. 😁😎

The screwdrivers look terrific. So glad you bought them to give them a good second life. I heard on Philly NPR station someone saying he has 5ft of mud in his basement. Wow. Water can be pumped but mud will be back-breaking to remove from the basement. Glad you were able to use the sump pump to keep things under control. I was lucky, no flooding in my area and only 15min power outage. As a home owner, my experience is that water is often the biggest enemy - assuming no hurricane strength winds. Dave.
