Hope this was cool guys! Just please remember if you decide to try this to always use extreme caution, these PTC elements are like little stoves and can cause VERY severe burns or cause fires. And obviously don’t keep any flammable materials around/under where you’re using it.

Oh I know that feeling, my old GPU’s (RX480) fuse burnt so I got replacements but couldn’t desolder it. I ended up having to get a new GPU even though I don’t even use it much lol. It just sort of feels like a PC isn’t complete without a GPU. The only time I’ve actually found my GPU super handy was when rendering my CAD models with raytracing in Autodesk inventor. Something that took my CPU 40 minutes took my GPU seconds and it’s not even a fancy one

Very cool 😎 Where can we purchase the heating element?
@KeonsLab
Ай бұрын
They’re usually just called PTC heating elements that can be found on sites like ebay Amazon or Aliexpress. They come in different voltages and temperatures though. Also please be very careful if you do decide to get one because it’s basically a tiny stove so there’s a fire hazard as well.

Why did you use a heat sync for low surface area?
@KeonsLab

It’s all I had on hand, I tried ceramic fiber insulation sheets but the element got so hot it started leaving a brown ‘charring’ on it.

You know, I’ve never thought of that, I guess it might work, but I’m not sure getting flux all over a mom’s iron would be a good idea 😂

Oh absolutely not! That’s an actual proper device for this kind of stuff, the hack I’m showing here is mostly useful for assembling one-off small pcbs or fixing small parts.

@KeonsLab I was asking if there's a way to make a heating pad yourself. Like a DIY type of thing... I know they're inexpensive but I like making my own tools if I can
@KeonsLab

Ooh like those personal heating pads? I DEFINITELY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT!! While they ARE simple devices, the ones you get at the store are required to meet certain safety standards, and the companies making them are incentivized not to put out a dangerous product to avoid being massively sued, resulting in a pretty safe product with proven safety features that are usually hidden from sight. But if you try to make your own, there’s just SO MANY things that could go wrong that’s it’s not even worth it, and worst of all, if you hypothetically DID end up making one and severely hurting yourself or burning down a building, you wouldn’t be able to take any legal action against a manufacturer because you *were* the manufacturer (legally). I HIGHLY, HIGHLY URGE YOU NOT TO TRY THIS I love making my own tools and devices as well just like you, it’s super fun to make something yourself instead of buying it, but for some things it’s not advisable, for example things like space heaters, circuit breakers, heating pads, etc.

Not sure if it burned them or not but the board worked afterwards… could’ve damaged them maybe? I tried to see if I could find a maximum temperature for the components and a few sources said that ~290°C should be fine for them 🤔 Not sure but I’ll keep looking
