20 YEARS A PRO NEWS Photographer
2004, 20 years ago, I walked into my local newspaper handed them some pictures I'd shot, and in the words of the late great Yosser Hughes said "give us a job I can do that". Incredibly the Chief photographer Warren Buckland must have been pretty desperate so actually gave me a shot. 20 years later I'm still there shooting for Hawke's Bay Today the best damn newspaper in New Zealand, no, literally the best. So as the mother ship is calling me away for a month or so I thought I'd go through some of my archives, and came up with this selection of images from 2008 that really struck a chord with me. You see In my humble opinion photography transcends life people come and go and when they're gone all we have left is our memory and photographs. It's vitally important to photograph every day. I love a good landscape in good light there is nothing more relaxing than waiting for the right conditions to photograph a mountain or a river love it, but they will generally not change much in your lifetime, but people, people change they arrive and they leave, the fashions change the hairstyles change for some they just bugger off completely, but it's people that matter. Documentary photography is my happy place. Photograph people because one day those people will leave us and overtime our memories can fade.
I'll be home soon Mum and Dad love you XX
