Dang, looks like I missed this one in my feed. Great review man, and I seriously think that is one of the best looking sports bikes ever built. Maybe it's the yellow anniversary plastics, but to me that bike will always look good.

No abs, wheelie control, cruise control, traction control. Great now this bike can be ridden how it's supposed to be and it will be more reliable.

Bought mine new in 2006 while living in Australia from Chris Watson in Cessnock. Best bike I ever owned. Moved back to the UK in 2011 and sold the bike before the move. Worst decision of my life, both the sale and the move. UK sucks :(

Like the in depth review, sounds like you have some good experience around sport bikes. I actually just picked up a ruby red 2005 yamaha r1 and it is insane to ride and defiantly agree with all your cons on this body style, hit the nail in the head on those.

Had a 2006 R1 for a first bike. Awesome bike with a ton of power. Stock gears are very long but sprockets and chain helps with that. Definitely a go fast, fun bike. Respect the road and bike and you'll be fine.

electronics on bikes are of the devil!!! I hate traction control, wheelie control, power modes. all that shit. It's totally ruined racing and motorcycling in general. Bikes are supposed to be hard to ride and scary and dangerous! They're not for everyone. That's the whole appeal of it! That's what makes it cool. Honestly I think this bike is so cool looking that any cons don't matter.

got me an 06 R1 and have been taking good care of my baby. It’s one of the best liter bikes of the best era if you ask me. The newest bikes feel too teched up and contained. They also just don’t look as good as this era bikes. Keeping my R1 for that pure RAW power and heritage honestly. That i4 sound is much better imo than the cross-plane. That said I do have a fresher MV Agusta F3 Series Oro, but I LOVE the R1 for what it is! What an amazing machine!

dont forget to change the oem rotor, its prone to fail at some point and its basically a grenade inside the engine, change it to a reinforced one without the glued magnets. Also, start the engine at least one a week and let it warm up, the seals of the internal water/oil pump are prone to fail and send the coolant trought a hole in the oil pan. she doenst like low speeds and needs to be riden hard once a month at least, or she will start sputtering bad. its prone to overheat and the fan only kicks in at 105ª celcius, so i recomend instaling a manual switch to the fans so you can control them when you want. the exhaust under the seat cooks up your balls. the tps sensor is prone to fail and its recomended to call the dealership to put a new one. well the rest its a hell of a bike, i love the raw power and no electronic riding and shit..

Yeah you ain’t lyin about Yamaha clutch’s …I have an 06 R1 and a 16 FZ09…they both sound like they’re gonna explode until you pull the lever…my 02 YZ426 doesn’t but it’s a completely different design on the basket…either way this was a great review and I pretty much agree with all of it both pros and cons alike…maybe it’s because I’m older but I love the raw feel of both my bikes…it’s all up to the rider as far as handling, I honestly think the new bikes feel disconnected…but I’m used to carbureted death machines with shit brakes and tires that might have well been made out of pencil erasers 😂

" Nothing too crazy " ... lmfao, this guy describes a death machine as something casual... any 1000cc sportbike since the 1998 R1 is way too much bike for 90% of all riders on the street. Do not be fooled that bike can kill anyone very easily. If you drive it slow sure you can get away with it, but as soon as you really ride it, ride it like its meant to be ridden, start to push it a little bit... RIP.
