Currently having the same issue on my ‘97 Vic (Civilian Variant), and it’s bumming me the hell out. I love my car, but I have nowhere near the tools and equipment needed to get to the plugs, and I can’t justify spending the ≈$1000 needed to pay a mechanic on a car that cost me $1300. Thanks to all y’all in these comments for letting me know it’s a fairly common issue.

Thanks for posting video. You got me to thinking it's time to change my antifreeze . Certainly don't want to have freeze plug problem. Tested good and looks good but been a few years since changed. Thanks again.

A little over a year ago, I bought a '95 Crown Vic at what I thought was a great price. The previous owner did say it ran a bit warm sometimes. Should have run the other direction right then, but I didnt. Had to add some water before driving home. Got home, next day I checked the oil. Coffee with lots of cream. Long story short, there are four freeze plugs behind the timing chain cover, two on the heads and two in the block. They were all rusty as hell inside, and one had rusted through. Coolant was POURING into the motor oil. Actually contaminated the oil enough that the engine was toast. Further investigation revealed that several freeze plugs had leaked, and were slathered with J-B Weld. I now have a (allegedly) good used engine. First thing that will happen before installing the engine: every freeze plug will be replaced.

Wow that is crazy, someone didn't look out for that car before you

Wow...just found this again. That allegedly good engine had a cracked block! Apparently came from a wrecked car. Engine had been shipped to me, and the vendor completely refused to honor their warranty and either replace the engine or refund me. Fortunately, I paid by credit card, so I got the card company involved, and ultimately got a refund. By that time I was so sick of dealing with that car I decided to just let it go, and rebuilt a Geo Metro that had been sitting in the driveway for ten years. At least it doesn't have freeze plugs in silly places!

Praying mine is the plugs under the timing cover. We'll find out today. 🙏

1998 Expie 5.4 4x4. Took 4 days of working at my own pace to get to my rusty leakers behind the timing cover. Worst part of the job.....back bolt on the power steering pump. Do yourself a favor....rent both a harmonic bal. Puller AND a power steering pulley removal tool. Removing the power steering pump takes YEARS off your life.

Think I have this problem. Leak is on back of engine passenger side in the bottom corner.

So this is a common problem on these? What causes it ...high miles ....salt corrosion.... wear ?

Electrolysis from running either straight (rusty) water, overly diluted antifreeze or old, polluted coolant that's overdue for a flush.

I have a 97 grand marquis, and it slowly loses coolant. It does not overheat, and I add a few ounces to the overflow tank ever 100 miles or so. I added UV dye, and I went under the car, and it is dripping from somewhere onto the starter motor. I'm sure it's not hose leak, or any other components, so I am now afraid the block has a leak - maybe freeze plugs, or head? Has anyone here found coolant leaking onto the starter motor? Or tried any magic fluid fixes that worked?

The earlier models were known for cylinder head leaks they had to be pulled apart and resealed

@@FordBossMe Thanks for your input. I had a shop inspect it a few days ago , and they said I have a leak where the head and block seam is. So, an external head gasket leak. He said it would cost near $2,000, but he doesn't do that work. We both agreed the car was not worth the investment. A lot of rust, body and frame. He said I could try a liquid sealant called K-Seal. I've never believed in liquid fixes, but he said it sometimes works, and it can't hurt to try! What do you think? Seems like I can still drive it short distances, and just top of the coolant, but maybe the K-Seal would clog something up, like the radiator, or heater core?

I have a 2008 Lincoln town car same engine. Wow! that didn't happen to me yet, I'm already at 215,000 miles. Could that be an assembly line issue? That looks like a pretty penny to fix...

it's the nature of this vehicle coolant tube under intake is notorious for leaking and so is the intake manifold this had 3 leaks lol, freeze plug intake manifold coolant tube so we are doing head gaskets, timing chains, coolant tube, intake manifold and ALL - It will be a pretty penny for sure

I wonder what would cause that ? Just a fluke or would not changing coolant do that too?

My 09 Grand Marquis leaks between where the thermostat housing meets the intake. There's no dripping it just gets wet around the housing connection. What could be the problem?
@FordBossMe

Well that plastic cross over to is a known problem and the only way to really Fix It Is by swapping out the intake manifold
