Doing my 2.2 diesel tomorrow hopefully. The middle and rear boxes don't have enough hangers so it stresses the weld and the pipe snaps eventually.

Thanks for sharing : I am having this same problem ! I just lift the right side up and the damage is bad , no wonder the noise is loud !But I am not as handy as you, so I will have to take to a shop ! The cost of this part is about $140 , do not know the labor cost . Thanks again for a great detail show.

Great DIY video! I like your attention to detail and safety when doing a job like this. You got lucky where you cut the pipe to remove the old muffler. I just discovered my father’s 2007 RAV4 needs a muffler, but I will take it somewhere to get fixed. After 13 years the original muffler did it’s job. How many miles are on this RAV4?

Hahaha! Lucky indeed on that one cut. My RAV4 has 217K (km) on it now. Muffler was replaced at around 210K after 11 years on original muffler - city driven for past 8 years.

If you get better with the saw, you can go into the catalytic converter business!😄

so in the front is the resonator, the middle is the muffler.. but what is that large piece near the tailpipe, looks like a 2nd small muffler.

The front is the catalytic converter. The middle (being replaced) is the center muffler. The back piece is the rear muffler.

The rearmost bit would be the "resonator" but it actually does the opposite. It's a last ditch effort to get rid of any discernable frequencies or drone. Usually makes any noise from the exhaust sound like a hiss, rather than an exhaust note. "2nd muffler" is correct, I just wanted to add the theory that Toyota used.

I believe the catalytic convertor is close to the engine, well it is on the diesels, it's a tallish cylinder shape There's a probe just after it to check how things are doing in terms of gas output.
I prised the old one off mine. I may reuse it as it can't see how it wouldn't work? I have some RTV sealant if needed, that's high temp stuff.

Could you share the part number/brand of it? I used a Walker and it comes so close to the chassis it is knocking on it...

Walker PN: 55544. I had the same issue on mine. I had to bend the hanger posts on the muffler upward to give more clearance.

How annoying to not have a three piece exhaust.
@6581punk

I went and ordered the middle box and it was supposed to be once piece all the way to the front of the engine, connecting to the catalytic convertor. But it came in two pieces, so I think I'll do it this way as I think it will be hard to reach one of the bolts with a driveshaft in the way. I even bought a impact wrench to make it easier.

Yes, if you bought OEM part, it should be one piece but aftermarket part would likely be two pieces. Yes, it would be tough to remove those rusty bolts/nuts at the exhaust manifold. So doing my way would be much easier and more simple. We just need to measure twice before we cut the pipe. I just got lucky on mine. 😀
