I loved my equinox. The interior was second to none for ride quality.

? Just wondering with the oil blow by would I be better off ?? Getting a oil catch can cold air intake ,changing oil regularly n cleaning throttle body, some marvel mystery oil n Lucas oil from time to time till am able to get rid of it or whole new engine , rebuild???

Well, these engines are known for oil burning due to piston design and low tension rings. Blow by and oil burning are really two sides of the same coin. Until it gets to the point were you want to rebuild/replace the engine I would just keep up on oil changes, being careful to keep the oil topped off, and run it

is there anything wonky about that motor? im trippin on this crank bolt that i had to put breaker bar on to budge it and when i did it felt like it was tightening. so im trying to figure out if its a left hand thread or if the last a$$hole cross threaded it.
@NotEnoughProjects

No, the bolt is regular thread. It is very tight, so undoing it with a breaker bar can be really tough. Highly recommend an impact. Harbor freight has cheap plug in ones that will do the job.

Oh i can get it off no problem just want to make sure there isnt anything screwey. The bolt felt like it was stretching when i moved it. Thats why i ask really. You know how they feel when they stretch right before they break. Thanks for the info.

Oh, I see. The crank bolt is torque to yield so possibly that is what you were feeling. Do make sure you get a new crank bolt, reusing the old one can lead to breaking/backing off

Can you provide a link for those pistons? I'll have a core here soon I'm considering rebuilding.

Of course. The part number is P336, they are made by DNJ. The rings they take are PR336, but I could not find them in stock anywhere, so I ended up finding that these rings work: www.ebay.com/itm/363318711068 I'll put a spreadsheet of parts I used together and try to link it on all these ecotec videos.

In addition to the normal head bolts there's 4 etorx bolts in the timing chain area that will hang up the head. Are those out? Easy to miss (ask me how I know 😂)

yes got the bolts for timing area even the one that holds the chain guide, is any part of alternator or a/c belt on it, and I can't see under the fuel area but got the lines off.?

Hello,did this equinox burn oil after rebuilding it?
@NotEnoughProjects
10 ай бұрын
It does still burn some oil. If you were to get the block overbored and use the next size up piston there is a better chance at correcting the consumption. Unfortunately it seems that with the modern low tension rings some oil burning is the nature of the beast
@dyeshamoore2316

Did you overbore this engine? And if so to what size?
@NotEnoughProjects
9 ай бұрын
I did not overbore, although I would definitely reconmend it if the bore has any wear. It should be measured for taper and out of round. There are pistons available for a 0.5 mm and 1.0mm overbore. Generally you go with the smallest overbore that will clean up the bore

What main bearing bolts are you saying are torque to yield? I called my local GM parts dealer asked him to look this up and he said these bolts are not torque to yield. Which ones are you talking about?
@NotEnoughProjects

Hey, going off the service manual the lower crankcase and connecting rod bolts must be replaced. Check out pg 492 of the manual linked in the description where the manual specifies new bolts should be used. Generally when a bolt's final torque spec is given in degrees it is torque to yield

@@NotEnoughProjects Another question, when you honed the cylinder, what grit were the honing stones medium or fine?
@wnicorn6702
7 ай бұрын
Did you use a ball hone or stone hone for the cylinders. What grit?
@NotEnoughProjects
7 ай бұрын
Stone hone. Generally they are a better choice because they can do some (very) minor bore geometry correction. The ball hone just scuffs up whatever is there. I belive the stones I used were 240 grit. Would be ideal to finish even higher--maybe 400. If you have the means I would highly recommend getting the block bored rather than diy honing. Much more likely to fix oil burning and the new pistons are very cheap (look on rockauto.com)

Those engine well made is a good engine ecotecs for my opinion is the second 4 cylinder engine L4 that is good for a American made this engine is use a lot on the slingshot in the Opel in race desert they go up to 300hp if you modify them and I have like 3 ecotecs already bit the oldy ones and those do not run you oil so fast this 2.4 for some engenier reason and stupid reasons don't made them right like make a PVC. Valve breaded and others components but is a good engine .Some said ooo time chain problem yeap all have those issues Honda got those issues the V6 VTEC but nothing that breaks you mind those engine are easy to work and cheap to repair plus is a big plus nobody wants them better for us jaaaaaa more parts

I found it to be one of the easier modern engines to work on, especially once in the car. Some design flaws obviously, but no engine is perfect! Has been a great driver so far.
