Did my first AT attempt with this binding, Atomic Ultra Hawk 130, and Blizzard Rustler 9 skis up Perry Merrill @Stowe today. Worked like a charm uphill and down. Only challenge was ensuring that the toe inserts engaged and were seated (though it was dark and snowing).

I have a question about these bindings, I have two boots one with pin holes and one without they have different boot sole length. Is it possible to adjust the heel piece using simple screw drivers to match the sole length? Or I have to remove the heel piece entirely from the skies and then re mount them to Mach my other boot ? Thank you
@SkiEssentials
3 жыл бұрын
Possible? Yes, depending on how close they are in sole length. I would expect they're close enough to not need a re-drill. The issue here is properly setting forward pressure and toe height. That's really important for safety, and if you're unsure about it, even just a little bit, I'd recommend having a shop do the adjustment if you can.

What bindings recomended for me? I LOVE Powder days, take jumps 2-3 meters but not usually, because in spain we have Powder days 5 at season. I hope they're coming out with a wider brake than what I'm seeing online right now. 120mm is good for many, but there are a lot of folks on 120+ skis out there. One thing that wasn't very clear in the video demo, is the elevator (heel rise) piece. Is it just one level, or are there two levels? Most AT bindings have at least two and I use both levels frequently on my bindings. I'd love to be rid of the frame that my bindings have, but that doesn't really make the ski flex any less than having your boot in the bindings which acts like a frame in that regard as well. And I'd never bought into the tech binding (Dynafit) due largely to the exorbitant cost and concern about strength on the DH. A ski buddy had a pair of Dynafits that broke the first day. That was enough for me to stay away from those.

I purchased the shift binding with QST106s and have been extremely happy with them. Had to tweek the binding settings a few times throughout my first season (raising toe piece alpine/touring setting and fine tuning din settings to eliminate premature releases). Have used them at the resort and backcountry and been very happy. Not the lightest setup, but feel safe and they can be skied pretty hard and they work as advertised. Would buy them again.

you guys mentioned using it with two different boots, what would be exactly what i want to use it for because on piste performance with a touring boot is by far not the same. @SkiEssentials

A little bit, yeah. If you really wanted to use two different boots you'd have to be comfortable adjusting forward pressure, toe height, etc. You could, however, switch back and forth between touring and alpine boots if you wanted to use one pair of skis for both touring and alpine use and happened to already have two boots.

Hi thanks for the review You mentioned that you can use your alpine boot and also use your tech boot. How would you deal with the different sole lengths? (tech boots being smaller) Thanks !
@SkiEssentials
3 жыл бұрын
I suppose it's more something that could happen in theory, not always in practice. It kept sticking in my mind because I actually tested the Shift with different boots when it first came out. We did an alpine test day where I skied a 130 flex alpine boot, then I also skied them in a touring boot. Interestingly, my alpine and touring boots have identical BSL. For different BSLs, you'd have to adjust the forward pressure and stuff, which I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing on your own, but it would still be possible.
@Paceitis
3 жыл бұрын
@@SkiEssentials Yea thats what I had figured. Found it interesting that you also mentioned you had done it - as I had bought a similar set up few days ago, and I've been searching for a touring boot with the same BSL in the meantime. Seems possible with Scarpa so far, maybe at a pinch Salomon. Do you think an alpine boot with BSL of 306 and a tech boot with BSL of 305 would be fine, or still require adjusting each time? Thanks!

what do you guys think is the difference between the shift and the marker kingpin in terms of performance on the up and downhill?
@SkiEssentials
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter! So, the Kingpin still has the edge on the way up, simply because it's lighter and a little bit lower profile. The Shift, however, definitely wins on the way back down, so you kind of just have to ask yourself which you value more. There's not a huge weight difference between the two, it's about 200 g, but that's enough to be significant for some skiers depending on what they're looking for.

You may find conflicting opinions and experiences on this subject. What we've found is that if you use them properly and have them adjusted correctly, you get a lot better performance and they hold up. If you are just using them as resort bindings and if they're improperly adjusted, the satisfaction seems to go down. They have just refined the binding for the 2025 season with an improvement to the AFD zone, so hopefully some of those negative experiences will be fewer and further between.

Great review, but couple more questions to ask: 1) How do those switch levers work when impacted icy snow gets into the mechanisms, particularly after a long tour when you’re switching back into ski mode? 2) There appears to be no boot stop to line up the tech inserts on the boots with the pins. Is this correct, and if so how difficult is it to get into the pins when there’s lots of snow & ice on the binding?
@SkiEssentials
6 жыл бұрын
Hello! 1) We haven't had any issues so far, although we'll continue to test them. They're fairly industrial feeling, if that makes sense. Not many little moving parts that could freeze up. 2) There's no guide, but it's super easy to get into the pins. We toured on a -10 degree morning when you really wouldn't want to be fussing around with getting into the pins and didn't have any trouble, even with a snowy boot.
