Trains like this are what made America the greatest country in the world. They were the backbone of a nation. Thanks for the great video.

What a magnificent piece of machinery .A fund should be set up so that every man woman and child, wether it be beside the track driving the highways or Facebook or u tube, that saw this magnificent beast can contribute as little as one dollar. The amount of funds this would generate would keep these wonders of the world in service for many many generations into the future .Thank you for the wonderful videos 👍👌

İbrahim Reşat Subutay although it’s the largest, it is not the strongest ever built. However, it is likely the strongest operating locomotive.

Chuck Wlodarczyk Big Boy deserves the music. Then again, Big Boy makes its own music. The breath of this iron horse and its gallop down the rails is music in its own right.

I know it is a needed safety factor, but it seems an insult for this great machine to have to look back and see another engine in its line of cars. For "just in case"..

The diesel loco is there primarily for reasons of dynamic braking when descending slopes, and at times its dynamic brakes are brought in to put more of a load on the Big Boy when they need finer speed control than the throttle can provide.

24:25 is a prime example of using the diesel to hold the Big Boy back so it can get a chance to really get a workout.

lpt brakes, electricity, helper in case Big Boy breaks down. That last one is just a formality. Big Boy is a finely tuned and solidly built machine, the pride of Union Pacific. It won’t need that diesel’s help.

@@spartangoku7610 even a steam locomotive in prime condition can be run out of steam by an inexperienced engineer...if there isn't a diesel in the consist, the engine would have to foul the mainline for around 30 minutes to build steam pressure again. All modern railroads require a diesel in the consist (by way of the rulebook) so that the mainline won't be fouled by an engine that's out of steam!

I love it when their whistles are old, worn out and "hoarse" sounding. The locomotives are survivors. No matter how meticulously detailed and comprehensive a restoration, they are still survivors and I like for that quality to be seen and heard in them. I like their patches to show and their voices to be scratchy.
