I watched her when she left the Pomona Fair Grounds and went to Colton Yard. I then watched her climb Cajon Pass, DIT, but looking awesome as she left So Cal for her trip home. Now, she is out there, LOOKING awesome as ever ans strutting her stuff. 4014 is well worth the trip to see her, hear her as she slides by. WELL DONE UP RR, your Steam Shop Rocks getting her in service in record time

Excellent video about a beautiful machine. I have loved the steam locomotive since about 4th grade (that would be 70 years ago) when a few of us little knotheads would sneak away from school at recess to hide under a bridge so we could watch the Southern Railway steamers thunder by.

This is BY FAR the best video of what I like to see. We were fortunate enough to see Big Boy in Marshall TX (the start of this video) and meet Ed Dickens while the Big Guy was on static display. Ed is a super nice guy. We thoroughly joyed UP's hospitality while hosting the event at their depot. Thank you for posting.

The whine you hear are the dual steam generators. They are on top of the boiler and you can usually see steam venting out of them.

Are they piston or turbine based? Are they original, or modern ones designed to put out a lot more power to meet modern needs?
@williamalbin7977
4 жыл бұрын
@@rontroy3843 They are turbines. Made by Pyle-National (still in business) model M06. Not sure of the output, but they originally were DC current.

@@williamalbin7977 Understood. They are fairly loud when 4014 is standing still. I wonder what the electrical load for 4014 is today - what is being powered, and whether this is the original pair from when 4014 was built.

@Carl Clarke Do locos, including 4014, have any batteries, for instance, for operating certain equipment before steam is up?
@rontroy3843

@Carl Clarke 4014 does have a radio! It didn't occur to me that the 2nd loco in the consist could provide PTC services for the train. But is it viable to put cab signals and PTC directly in 4014?

Great compilation. With all the people following the 4014 with cameras do the people ever get into fights for the best viewing location? Have any of the drones crashed into each other?

So at 30:06 there is a shot of the cab markings and a partial explanation. After the”540” which is the weight on the drivers the stoker type is listed as ”SB”. What is an SB stoker?

There's a constant sound when the 4014 is standing still. Anyone identify it?

It's the Steam Dynamo, think of it like the alternator in a car, but instead of being belt driven, it uses steam

We watched 4014 in Clinton Iowa when it left and there was wheel slip! Kind of hard to have wheel slip when you're "mostly being pushed by the diesel behind it" MORON.

Are you dumb, the diesel is only for dynamic braking.
