The J35 is one of the best V6 engines ever produced. To hook it up to one the the worst transmissions ever produced is a slap in the face of the true performance of the engine. Idk why or who approved using the ZF 9 Speed unit over at Honda/Acura, but it was a horrible move that real Acura fans do not respect. The choice was lazy and in the name of pinching pennies.

The ZF9 is technically quite a bit faster at shifting (gears 1 through 4) than Acura's old 6 speed. Shifts from gear 5 to gear 6, gear 7 to gear 8, drive to reverse, and vice versa use something known as a dog clutch. The transmission and engine must work together to physically align teeth similar to the dog clutches in a manual transmission. There are no synchronizers though, it's entirely software and relying on changes in engine speed, which means it is a lot slower. You can power shift a manual, but it's impossible for the ZF9 to shift 4-5 or 7-8 without removing engine power completely. That is why it feels so slow, especially when downshifting. The transmission essentially has to shift to neutral, you get a rev match from the engine, and then the control module has to wait until the two sides of the dog clutch are perfectly matched to slam them together. Then it restores power in the new gear.

With all that, I maintain my position. 🥴 I worked for FCA (Currently Stellantis), and even the product trainers couldn’t BS us on the horrible response and laggy delay between “P” “R” & “D”. One trainer was like “who’s driven the 9 speed!? Then says “so sorry to those of you who raised your hands.” We all bust out laughing because he knew that transmission was dog 💩, and refused to use all the corporate, marketing terms. He was and still is a very respected trainer.

It still lives on in the base MDX. It was outclassed in the TLX vs the competition. Remember, this j35 TLX was technically Acura’s answer to the S4, 340i and C450/C43 AMG and the k24 was the competitor to the 2.0t Germans. The new powertrains are finally competitive.
@HKN_RealReviews
Жыл бұрын
I know it’s still in the MDX all trims besides Type-S. The point was this is the last V6 sedan and it deserved the 10 speed. This 9 speed is just garbage. And I don’t think Acura would ever put the J35 up against those cars nor would they think the K24 was competitive to the competitions torque rich i4’s. Acura has always had their own lane and fan base. I don’t think anybody is crazy enough to compare this to a C43 AMG. Besides the fact that they are in totally different price categories, the current TLX models are still not truly competitive with respect to range of powertrains and options. Everybody else has some sort of mild hybrid and here is Acura still offering just two engine configurations and they aren’t hurting for sales. People who buy the TLX Type-S/ or regular TLX usually don’t even mention those other cars. My point is Acura buyers are Acura buyers like 9 times out of 10.
@drivescene6747

@@HKN_RealReviews yeah, the new powertrains aren’t as quick as the competition, but they are now mentioned in the conversation which they weren’t before, so that’s a huge step forward. People in the M340i groups actually respect the TLX Type S, same story with the C43 groups. That wasn’t a thing before, so now there’s actual cross shopping against the Germans. I will agree that they need some form of hybrid option, but I will disagree about the sales, they fell short of their 200k goal last year, though they are on the right track with a very solid lineup. All they are missing with regards to ICE, is the RDX Type S, a CDX based on the Integra and a Type S version of that.
@HKN_RealReviews

@@drivescene6747 They fell short surely due to low production. They are back on pace because we have more cars on ground than we have in the last 2 years. They can’t sell what they don’t produce, hence the lower sales figures. But demand was and is still high. The difference is we have the inventory now.

@@HKN_RealReviews yeah, I’m aware. American Honda took one of the hardest hit with regards to supply chain issues. But just to be fair, whatever the reason, they still missed the target. That all said, I believe they will exceed the target, the MDX from base to Type S is amazing, the Teg is flying off the lots, the RDX needs a new Gen but still pulling strong and the TLX is a solid car that is selling well for the segment.

The ZF 8 Speed is for RWD/RWD based AWD platforms only. The ZF 8 speed literally couldn’t go into this car even if they wanted to. The only way to do that would be to change it to a rear drive set up which they’d never do. But yes the ZF 8 speed is a great transmission. It’s amazing they could produce one of the best transmissions and one of the most shit transmissions at the same time.

@HKN_RealReviews oh dang I didn't know the 8 speed was only for rwd vehicles. Lol moral of the story, the 9 speed was not the right choice lol. I still think Honda should've given the new tlx the v6 with the 10 speed. The 2.0t does NOT fit that car imo.

12:23 in an emergency situation, you would punch the accelerator pedal all the way down to the floor. In that case, would the transmission just slip like crazy (like an old 4L60E with converter drainback issues) or would engine power be limited until the transmission got into gear correctly?

I actually like the 8 speed DCT with the 4 cyl. Wish the DCT could handle the power of the V6 because honestly, that would be a good combo. But the 9 speed is horrible IMO. Many people find it perfectly acceptable in its behavior…not me tho. It’s lethargic, slow shifting, and makes cars feel slower than they really are. And it’s not just this car.
