As a sound engineer and producer who works frequently with lo fi recording techniques I have to say that this kind of "rot" can occur on older low quality cd-r's from around the late 90s and early 2000s due to the fact that you literally have to burn data onto some of them. Add to that fact that if it was burnt at the wrong speeds for those discs they will last about 2 months before they start to sound bitcrushed like the songs here but honestly it doesn't take much and can be replicated with some care if you know a thing or two. I know this has been long winded but I have one more small point that the warping you can hear may be from shitty tape they used to record the masters I have to say it is unlikely because if you had warping this bad you would never use those as your masters anyway. Regardless I hope I have shed light on the subject for those who are interested and I will say if this isn't from the early era of cd-r's they have done a spectacular job on the production side, the guerilla marketing is top notch and the album is phenomenal just discovered it and am loving every track
@evilexnumber3
4 жыл бұрын
@@toad8840 yeah if in post without the original stems they've removed a hiss like that that's most likely where the vauge warping has appeared as it's gotten rid of some frequencies at certain parts, I have to add that this album has become a fast favorite of mine I find myself coming back to it often and I only stumbled across it about a week ago so that's a testament to these beautiful songs
@shitocodone8940

Wait so CDs have an expiration date of sound quality? I have a shit load of those CD-R discs from probably 2000s was thinking about putting my songs on there and then burning them. Are you saying if I wait a few months before burning they could have a similar sound?
@evilexnumber3
4 жыл бұрын
@@shitocodone8940 it all depends on brand and how old they are, plus if they've had data on them the entire time. For the degradation to occur it needs data on it in the first place to degrade. It might still give you that effect with a fresh burn but I can't speak to the results as I've never seen or done it myself, let me know the results because this could be an interesting use for an experimental band I've been recording lately by mixing the "clean" sound with the rotted one

i was talking about this with a friend the other day, just imagine the amount of music we’ve lost in the past due to lack of being able to store it. so many old EPs and albums made by nobodies that probably have very good music, lost due to time. like think about it, maybe the best song you would ever hear in your entire life was made in the 1980s by a bunch of college students, it just never got popular and is now lost due to time. digital music is great, the fact that you can upload your music to a couple of websites completely for free is incredible. i dont think we’ll loose much music now.

Technically it would already be with the seven tracks, as the RIAA defines an album as either five or more tracks at least 15 minutes in length or any amount of tracks if it's at least thirty minutes, but the former definition seems too lenient of a threshhold and unsatisfying

I enjoyed the whole album and I loved it how nostalgic and calm sounding it sounds, it reminds me of the early 2000s alternative music. This is one of my favourites albums and I am glad to listen to this (nearly) 20 year-old album from the past. Amazing!

I had a dream last night where I was in some sort of art class and me and a bunch of other students were working on some charcoal drawings. In the class there was a radio playing music and at some point, a song that sounded very much like Kicking Cars started playing and everyone including me began singing along like it was just a pop song that everyone knew like that. It's not all the time that I have these vivid dreams with music I can recognize so distinctly, so for my brain have chosen that song in particular, especially the one with the lyrics that mentions dreaming, it's all very interesting.

Personally I think this album fits rarely well into the wake of OK Computer. It has similar vibes with the mix of electronic and rock elements with some weird experimentation and generally melancholy tone. The lo-fi rock sound is probably more an element of the recording conditions, but it’s not like weird lo-fi rock was unheard of, Grandaddy being a great lo-fi indie rock band from around the time. I’m not 100% convinced the story behind the album is true, but it’s fairly believable that a group of young guys could’ve made this in the late 90s.

As a person who generally isn't particularly into lofi (but is admittedly into weird indie stuff) I can say that this is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time. If you classify two EPs as an album, this would probably make my top ten. I don't know how much that means coming from someone who doesn't know shit about music (all my other favorites are normie picks), but there it is. If this got a proper CD release I would buy it in a fucking heartbeat. EDIT: I have visited the Bandcamp and my dreams have come true.

This album reminds me of the early 2000s, when everyone had a Nokia phone and there was no Coronavirus.
