That is true and a big oversight in this review. It also explains why max cargo volume is so much less than rivals. You can remove the seats with someone wrench work and there are videos that show this but not easy. The REASON you cannot remove them is that they have built in airbags which increase safety. Toyota didn’t want people unplugging airbag wires. It makes some sense.

@j.r.b.5464
3 жыл бұрын
I predict Toyota will engineer a way to easily remove the rear seats, despite their "airbag" excuse, in the next model year or two. The Odyssey has 50% more cargo space and the new Kia Carnival nearly so as well. A VW Atlas has 97 cubic feet of cargo space, making this minivan no better in this regard than mid-sized cross over SUVs. It's advantage is fuel economy. Some may accept the class trailing cargo capacity as a worthwhile price to pay for the stellar efficiency. Many won't. Most by a van for filling with stuff. It will be a deal breaker for many buyers - even Toyota van-driving loyalists. Much like the stubborn refusal to support Android Auto in the past steered tens of thousands of prospective customers to competitors with a more enlightened technologically. For me, if I think of this as a Prius V replacement it makes total sense. As a minivan, it's less compelling. The other problem Toyota, run by accountants rather than engineers (either management focus has downsides) is that mistakes and market tone-deafness for Toyota models tend to haunt the company for much longer than other makers who make similar mistakes, on account of Toyota's "squeeze every yen out of a design" very long product cycles. 10-years on the last Sienna; the competitions' cycles are 5-6 years for new models. On the other hand Toyota may not care. This may be a last hurrah in what it perceives as a dying segment. A few thousand units of sales lost on account of weak design decisions may be acceptable to their spreadsheet wizards. In fact the current highlander hybrid, in addition to sharing similar design language, is just 16 cubes shy of the minivan in stuff-swallowing capability. Perhaps Toyota is hoping to steer its minivan base to the increasingly similar Highlander.

@@kradwonders if you're only getting 23.5 mpg, something isn't adding up. Either something is wrong with your van, or you have a lead foot. Based on Toyota's quality and reliability, I'd bet on the latter. Hence citationbob's statement on "learn how to drive a car." In other words, slow down and take it easy on the gas pedal. Drive it like a minivan with infants and 90 year olds in every seat instead of like a sports car going to work. Treat it like kinky sex. Use 25% of your foot. Slow stroke the gas pedal like she's a petite virgin instead of hoof stepping it like a $2 hooker. Get freaky by slow pivoting your foot like someone is gently kissing it, instead of hammering down like you're kicking a burglar in the face. Imagine with me. Underneath your gas pedal is a egg, not a 4 inch water bug name lucifer. If you follow this advice, you won't get a citation from bob, and perhaps your spouse will provide the same four play to your feet as you should do to the gas pedal. This is a lesson in erotic mpg.
