Misselwood Tour d’Elegance - Saturday July 17, 2021
Each year, a panoply of iconic automobiles set upon the historic roads of the North Shore for the Misselwood Tour d'Elegance. Participants enjoyed a grand circle tour of the area, stopping at the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm. Dating back to the Colonial Era, the 231 acre farm is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
On roads less traveled the tour continued on, passing by farm-houses and town squares alike, that predated by centuries even the tour's oldest entry, a 1914 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. En route back to the Misselwood mansion, the tour hugged the coast, visiting the hamlet of Goose Neck. Originally the common grazing grounds for the settlement of Ipswich’s livestock in the 1600’s, the island’s bluffs are now home to many summer cottages and permanent residences.
Continuing along Route 133 into Gloucester, the tour then headed south on scenic Route 127, returning to Misselwood. Sitting along Beverly's Gold Coast, Misselwood is one of the many opulent summer estates built along the town's rocky shores by Boston's elite, beginning in the 19th Century. The cool breezes, beautiful views and the railroad coming to Beverly in the 1840's proved an irresistible draw for the nation's elite from Boston, New York City, and beyond. The Misselwood Tour d'Elegance ended with a gourmet lunch, accentuated by beautiful bright skies and a gentle breeze.
And then there was Sunday…
Misselwood Concours d’Elegance - Sunday July 18, 2021
With a foreboding forecast and early morning thunderstorms, the outlook for the Sunday Concours was anything but sunny. But if there is one thing true about New Englanders, they are a hardy bunch, and seldom let stormy weather win the day. Though the rain was seldom more than a brisk drizzle, it came in waves throughout the morning, keeping tarps, umbrellas and entrants, working to wipe the droplets from the cars, quite busy. Despite the rain, the judges were not thwarted, spending time with each vehicle as they evaluated a deserving field of entrants.
With the afternoon came improved conditions. The tarps and umbrellas retired and the sun even appeared for a fleeting cameo. Anticipation grew as the afternoon stretched on, with entrants and guests alike, anxiously awaiting the awards ceremony. Predictions abounded as patrons speculated which car might take home the top prize. Would it be the immaculate 1952 Talbot Lago Grand Sport, or the raucous 1961 Chaparral 1 Prototype? Perhaps it would be the 1914 factory-built Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost race car, the stunning 1960 Aston Martin DB4 or the equally breathtaking 1932 Lincoln KB V12 Custom Coupe.
Best in Show for the 11th Misselwood Concours d’Elegance was awarded to with their stunning 1914 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost - a car they love to drive. Not only did they participate in the road tour, but just a few weeks earlier, they took the car up Mount Washington.
