I think I would change the whole rear shock to avoid the ridiculous rebound on the stock shock. I get what you are saying about cost but that rear shock is garbage.

I did the RaceTech suspension on an XR400R. 200# rider + gear was a 10.6 rr spring. It’s interesting to see how weight and linkage geometry makes a difference...I’m about 210-15 with gear etc. and it’s still a bit soft...

So basically, what you have done here is cut the effects of the pogo stick feeling in half? Meaning that you no longer feel like your on a pogo stick when you, and the weight of the bike are traveling downwards, compressing the suspension, but you still feel it when you and the bike rebound upwards, relieving the suspension, perhaps even more intense than in stock form? Does that sound accurate? It’s a serious question. My budget is running thinner and thinner, but something has to be done to this suspension, or else I’ll never be able to improve my off roading skills. But I am a bit concerned about choosing just the spring option, because I fear that it won’t be able to offer adequate performance for trying to develop better skills in off road situations such as terrain that consist of whoops... I’m getting the impression that just replacing the spring will just send me flying out of control, in a whoops situation, more so than just being in stock form. Am I overthinking this? Or would this be an accurate assessment? I’m just a few pounds over 200lbs. myself...

The race tech fork spring is definitely on the stiff side, you can cut there pre-load tube to soften it up. Rear spring is good except for the rebound, it doesn’t effect you when riding it’s just something you feel through the chassis. In your case if it’s in your budget I would probably get K-tech complete rear shock & K-tech for spring. I think it will definitely perform better for you. You could get a lighter RaceTech rear spring 195-235lbs. & cut 10mm off of there fork spring pre load tube & try that.

@@kcoutside7143 so you’re saying if I go with a lighter rear spring, 195-235lb, it will be better than stock, but not as aggressive as yours? Kind of offering a happy medium? And cutting 10mm off the Race Tech fork spring tube will do the same, and make it feel not as stiff as it would be if I left the 10mm’s on? I didn’t think about that. I was thinking about purchasing a slightly lighter spring, if possible. But that makes more sense. I know a new rear shock and spring is the best way to go. I just might have to put it off for another month or so to save up for it. But if I can get by with what you are saying, I could order the parts today... I guess no matter what, anything is better than stock. Lol. I appreciate the help!

I am just assuming what the results would be. It would basically be a trial & error type of thing. Regardless it will be better than stock. It’s a tough call. Even though I am happy with my set up, I may at some point go with a K tech rear shock.

@@kcoutside7143 I think that’s would I should probably do, is just spend the money. Especially since I really like the bike, and at the current time, I have no intentions on getting rid of it. Plus I have to factor in my inseam and the fact that I’m vertically challenged, so opting for the one that is designed for short people is probably in my best interest anyway. Last time I looked though, they were out of stock on lots of these shocks. The rear spring was the only thing available. So I don’t even know when they will become available again... I do appreciate your input.

@@kcoutside7143 Did you just upgrade sprints on forks and shock? Spring rates set the balance of the bike based on the rider weight plus chassis weight including bias based on any type of riding style or luggage or passengers on some bikes even. In simple terms valving controls the action or movement based on velocity. These bikes are super under sprung and under-damped. While springs will help control the crazy dive and a lot of the bottoming, if you want it to really perform you have to look at valving for someone over about 120 lbs.
