We are offered these hybrid vehicles but their price cuts so far into the gas 'savings' that one has to wonder if the price is so high because they cost that much to manufacture, or if automakers are just up-charging for their hybrids to take a slice of your gas 'savings' for themselves.
@tomjanowski8584

This argument just doesn't hold water. My friends just shopped for a new car. Their budget was $35,000. They bought a new Prius. Their other option was a compact SUV. The Prius got more than double the gas mileage of the compact SUV. How did the price of the Prius cut into gas savings? It didn't.

For a lot of people it’s not even about saving money. They want to burn less fossil fuels, stop for fill-ups less often and have more range.
@jordanimatedstreaming

@@tomjanowski8584 I get what you're saying, but Toyota hybrids are the most affordable. You chose the extreme example to support your argument. Automakers waking up the idea of realistic price affordability for hybrids has only recently begun to enter the market due to disinflation and a need to generate sales post-pandemic.

@@JasonYergin Do they have more range between fill-ups? Often hybrids will have a smaller gas tank to keep the curb weight low and thereby keep the mpg's up. In the USA the topic of fossil fuels often takes a 'back seat' in the conversation. If gasoline was suddenly lowered in price everybody would just go back to buying V8 trucks, like the crazy buying action we saw during and immediately after the pandemic.

I have decided against getting the PHEV in favor of the standard Hybrid. I intend to use it on long road trips where the 32 miles of full EV mode will have little value but where the 400 extra pounds of batteries will have an adverse effect on hybrid MPG. When I am putting 500 to 600 hundred miles a day on the Sportage, the 3 MPG difference in between the Hybrid and the PHEV in hybrid only will save me 2 gallons of gas. I have seen very few charging stations at hotels and when I have, they always had a Tesla parked at them all night.

The Canadian SX PHEV is equivalent to the US Prestige. Actually, the Canadian version gets more equipment than the US, so you shouldn't need to worry. It's just a trim name change. However, the US just gets the X-Line look instead.
