@@alexstromberg7696 Hey, guess what everyone does with every car 90% of the time? The Prius is also ideal for road trips and taxi duty. But yeah, if you want a Texas Mile car, don't buy a BRZ or a Prius. Still though, even if you do drive a 1,200hp ZL1 with nitrous, unless you're actively doing Cannonball pace on the 405, a Prius can match your speed over the road. Fast cars aren't fast point-to-point unless you're prepared to break laws and have lawyers on retainer.

@@JETZcorp Speeding isn't as dramatic as you make it sound. People most of the time don't get caught, and if they do, it's a simple speeding ticket. Cars for enthusiasts are about the thrill and engagement of the drive. Priuses are appliances. They now have a decent 0-60 but that's not where joy or engagement comes from. You are correct that every car commutes 90% of the time but fail to mention the difference in driving dynamics/fun/engagement or anything else that makes a fun car fun to drive as they commute. To say they do the same thing just as well is disingenuous otherwise there would only be singular CAR to buy. That being said, I would consider the new Prius as a new car buy for a long-term commuter because that's what they're built for. And the BRZ/86 I would consider if I want to have fun every day I commute to work. Choices, choices.

@@ilovebanks1526 I get what you're saying, since I'm literally in my Miata right now. However I think a disappointing number of people derive their car enthusiasm entirely from spec sheet performance. A large percentage of modern performance cars drive like 500hp Priuses with uncomfortable springs. This is the kind of person who scoffs at the idea of getting a BRZ because it's not powerful, and gets offended by the idea of a Prius ever crossing their 3/9 line. These are the kinds of people who need to be reminded that even a 2001 Prius WILL do felony speeds, so worrying about getting passed by one is pointless. As you point out, the real goal is engagement, which IMO you get about the same amount of in a Prius or an M4 at same speeds. That's why I lean towards cars like Miata, BRZ, or even really slow stuff like Mk.I VWs.

Two things I don't like is........ 1) the fixed glass roof. I want the roof to open. And 2) I don't see the rear wiper on the back window. I had a 2nd gen Prius and I'm a person who used the rear wiper. Really helped with vision.

This is the correct car for about 80% of people on the road. Most Tesla buyers, mist BMW leasees, most F-350 dually diesel commuters, should be in one of these if they're looking objectively at their needs. Some people do use trucks to haul or go off road, but most don't. Some people do drive their sports cars hard or on track, but most don't. Some people take the whole 4th-grade lacrosse team out to Chuck E Cheese, but most don't. If your car is a transportation appliance, get a Prius. Period.

I find Toyota’s car interior designs, in general and in my opinion, wanting. They never quite get it. It’s frustrating as the exterior design (especially in this example) is really good and of course there’s the reliability factor but for me I feel like I’d have to compromise if I went down the Toyota road.

For the first time, I can recommend a Prius to a friend and not cringe. It's a viablely decent car and stacks up really well to the ICE sedan competition. For the price, it's not all that bad on the inside or outside.

Did they do anything to fix catalytic converter theft on these things? Every prius on my block has been hit regardless of gen, and I don't want to deal with potentially waiting a month+ to fix it. Number one issue for me.

Yes and no. (I feel you; we put a shield on ours.) Pop Sci reports, "Toyota Prius Chief Engineer Satoki Oya told PopSci that a reduced quantity of rare metals in the newest generation catalytic converter might make it less appealing to thieves. Although looks-wise, it wouldn’t appear too different." I'll leave it to you as to how much stock you want to put in this answer.

While I love this new Prius, but just get a similarly priced all electric Chevy Bolt EUV or Nissan Leaf and then you don’t have to worry about running out of the 40-mile electric range, as you’ll get 5x the EV range with these two (200+ miles).

The biggest reason I would probably move to a crossover is because cars have just gotten way too low. I don't mean ride height. I mean the body is like slammed to the pavement. You look at cars in the previous decades and they had more ground clearance than crossovers. What happen? Cars are just so easy to damage. Life throws BS moments at you. You can barely see out of new cars, you can't feel the corners, you might be in a area you never been too, you hit a pothole, you live in a hilly area where roads incline and decline suddenly in merging roads. A crossover just can take most of this like a champ. Well most of them can.
@speedracer2please

I've been wondering about this. I live in a city and rented a Corolla and the front bumper scraped the ground just driving out of the lot. If the Corolla is too low here, I can't imagine where anyone can drive one. Which is a shame, because there's no other reason for a crossover in this area.
@baronvonjo1929
Жыл бұрын
@@speedracer2please I was with a friend in her current gen Corolla once as well and went doing mild mild offroading on gravel the whole car slammed into the ground over a little bump and definitely damaged the underbody. The most normal crossovers on the path took it like champs. This honestly why in the future I would really like to own a "car" sedan coupe whatever and also own a crossover or a real SUV. Normal cars are just too impractical. The very low bodies and ride height etc. I like them but automakers just make them less and less practical every new one they make.

Man these things are going to sell FAST! It looks great and is going to get a lot of "on the fence" buyers to jump on it I think. I'd like to get one, but I'll wait a bit longer. This thing will be PERFECT for my 24 mile round trip commute however. Can you (or someone) let me know if that weird square bump where the front license plate goes can be removed? Or is that a piece of the bumper?

As a former owner of a 1st gen Chevy Volt (it was totaled after a very minor accident, but that’s another story), I can’t help but think GM abandoned the PHEV prematurely. This type of car was perfect for my use case… I live in a small Midwestern town so most of my driving was local and even with the 30 miles of EV range (in the summer) I rarely used gas during my daily travels. I also never had to worry about taking long trips in an area with an underdeveloped EV charging infrastructure.
@Krautastic
Жыл бұрын
I've been looking for a good deal on a 2nd gen volt for this exact reason. Being 15miles out of town, it seems silly to use 2 gallons of gas in my truck to make a round trip errand into town. But also, if I want to go to the next major city or to local site seeing a pure EV's range would be pushing it. I'd love this prius if it wasn't for the limited availability and huge prices for cars nowadays. I'd love to do better for the environment, but I guess I'll do that by keeping my 12 year old paid off vehicle.
@tonysterbenc
Жыл бұрын
I agree the concept of the Volt was ingenious and perfect for many people. But GM, like all American corporations, is a complete slave to the insatiable short-term profit demands of giant stockholders like the pension funds and equity gamblers. They and Ford killed off sedans not because nobody wanted one, but because of their investors' determination to punish them for making anything but highest-profit products. Now Ford's CEO says they'll de-emphasize 2-row SUVS too. Guess where this will end.

@@jackholmes8105 as per toyotas own slide 1 BEV takes as many batteries as 90 hybrids or 7 PHEVs. Tesla is currently on track to producing 1.6 million BEVs per year. so getting enough batteries to produce 11.2 million PHEVs or 144 million hybrids per year is possible if one wants to. toyota produces under 10 million vehicles a year. so they don't have a "resource issues" excuse.
