I disagree on sorcerers passing wizards in flexibility. wizards still get to cast every ritual in their book without tying up a prepared slot, plus they get to swap a preparation on short rest. Treantmonk also has said this, though Colby is closer to Monty.
@gregevans4126
Ай бұрын
To me the wizard should be the most powerful spell caster. The idea is they research, create, dig deep into long forgot tombs, etc to gain their spells. They should have the widest variety of spells as well significant flexibility. Personally, I think they should have access to a weakened versions of meta-magic as well. Also giving Bards access to all spells?!! What then makes clerics or druids unique? Yes, class abilities, but I like the idea that some spells can only be obtained from a deity or nature. Thus if you are not a cleric, many spells of divine nature are out. If you are not a Druid or Ranger, then certain nature spells are out. I guess I am going to have to wait till the player handbook is out, as I may be misunderstanding some of this. Overall, this sounds really good! Still, I am quite concerned about a few points.
@gousmannetje
Ай бұрын
@@gregevans4126 I'd like to vastly disagree on most points. As the sorcerer has an innate source of magic, in comparison to the Wizard's arcane/learned magic, it seems logical that sorcerers have the most powerful magic. But wizards should be more versatile and more able to specialize in certain types of magic as they do currently... And Bards... Remember that 1. Bards go to colleges too so they can encounter all kinds of teachers with different backgrounds of magic. 2. Music/art transcends the boundaries of the classes, don't you think? Music can bring out a strong passion in religious rites, as can music be an expression of ones strong connection with nature. Bards are versatile in that their arts can represent all sorts of aspects of the world. The divine and nature are definitely among them. The new feature will only incentive players to even deepen their roleplay...

@@gousmannetje I see what you are expressing and do see your points, but would like to interject. I would think the one whom studies the magic should be more powerful than the one that can "just do it". Just like a scientist, surgeon, tech, teacher, etc should be better than someone whom just walks off the street. I guess gousmannetje we'll just have to agree to disagree :). In defense of Sorcerers. They need something to differentiate them from wizards or why be one. Wizards do in general have more versatility, so there is that too. Still, sorcerers do get most of the best wizard spells. This one does not bother me as much as the one below though. Re-looking at the Bard magical secrets I realize now I mis-understood one part, but an important part. I did not realize that they can only learn 22 spells total from bard, druid, cleric, and wizard between levels 10-20. I still think that is not realistic. The most powerful spells a god/goddess can give a cleric, a bard can essentially mimic with no need for a god/goddess. Doesn't seem logical or fair to me. Significantly weakens the concept of deity. Yes, clerics do get divine intervention, but as I understand it (could be wrong) it is essentially to get a spell like affect without having the spell prepared. Unless the DM is generous, it essential is an oops I should have prepped spell XYZ vs ABC. Also, I do think all classes that have spells should have a few spells that no other class can access. In my opinion I still think this is a bit OP, not realistic, and at least touching the edge of unfairness. Yet, realizing that this feature is not as bad as I originally thought, it could be like Silvery Barbs. A touch OP, but not as bad as some people claimed.

I played 3.5 and had every book and used all the class options and feat choices to build wildly overpowered things. I played 3.5 until 4E came out. I played 4E and had all the books and played with all the things. When I picked up 5E I decided to NOT get any of the supplementary books (I feel like I've given them PLENTY of money over the years). It's been a REALLY great experience! It's pushed the role play aspect of the role playing a lot. When I want a new take on, for example, a rogue, I don't buy 2 or 3 extra books and cobble something together with some levels of rogue and some with ranger and subclasses of each from extra books (or whatever). I may build .... a druid and take the urchin background (for stealth and slight of hand) and explore how well a totally different class can perform those functions (incredibly well). There is SO much you can do with just the basic player's handbook, and this new player's handbook seems to have a lot more options in it. Having fewer options forces me to be more creative. The last 10 years of role play have been incredibly rewarding and I've grown a lot as a player.
@SirJerric
Ай бұрын
I haven't had a group to play with for years, but I very much agree with what you are saying here. I've been building a variety of characters as pre-builts to offer if I end up GMing a group of new players. I've been doing the "less obvious choice" for several of their backgrounds. A rogue, who is a retired army medic. A fighter, who is a journeyman farrier. A paladin, who is a wandering gladiator. And yes, I happen to have a druid with the urchin background as well, because I also liked the minor paradox.
@zero11010
Ай бұрын
@@SirJerric One of my favorite things is to just take one class, and make it function like another class. Make a religious rogue and declare that when they do extra damage with an attack (sneak attack) that this is the divine retribution from their deity. Yeah? It's INCREDIBLY fertile ground. A sorcerer who has natural magic powers, but thinks they've accepted a pact bond with ... whatever. So, they think they're a warlock with a specific type of pact and play into some of those stereotypes. It's more fun if you heavily role play in such a way that even the other players at the table don't really know what's going on with your character. Make a barbarian that thinks they can wild shape into the form of a bear! But, really it's just their barbarian rage. But, when they think they're wild shaped, they only communicate in grunts and growls. This would work the other way around. There's a whole lot you can do with this general concept and it opens up a LOT of new ways to make a given class function. Now instead of rogue with 3 subclasses ... you have those rogue options, plus all of the bard, monk, ranger, druid, fighter options. You could likely make cleric or even wizard or sorcerer work.

It feels like this is enough for me to jump into the game and be led and helped by experienced players without feeling inadequate. At the same time, I am less scared of playing the game 'wrong way'. And to the point of less role-playing guidance I actually dont mind. I want to learn the game first and try it out and will surely become more knowledgeable about how to role play with time. Even small things like each class having the same amount of subclasses is giving me a lot of hope that I am acutally going to be able to handle all the rules and eventually find a group and play.

With regards to Great Weapon Master and Sharpshooter, I wonder if future books will include feats that are restricted beyond level 4 which increase damage at the cost of accuracy. I would probably be open to offering an "Overkill" feat as a homebrew that lets one take the -5 to hit for +10 damage, but set the required level somewhere around level 8. I think the main draw for GWM and Sharpshooter was that they helped martial classes keep up with the output of casters, especially at higher levels. I don't think giving that back to martial players around the time casters start pulling out 5th level spells would unbalance the game any, and since it's level locked, it would give the players plenty of time to figure out who they want to be before they get there.

Thank you all for such an in-depth, brief, overview of the 2024 PHB. I really liked a lot of the points you brought up. I am really interested to see what happens when the Monster Manual and the DM Guide impact the decisions made with the PHB. I like your point about using the personalities as inspiration for character creation. I use those all the time to think more in-depth about my character. I know you mentioned they provide a list of questions to think about. I am curious if these list of questions are expanded in the DM Guide and/or new Campaign settings. The only reason I would be okay with this is that, if they are truly going with a generic set up applied to different multiverses, I can see how character personalities could be impacted depending on the setting. IF (and again this is a big IF) that is the case, I think this provides the DM and the characters to work together to create a character that also fits the setting regardless of if it is an adventure, campaign setting, or even for homebrewed worlds. I am having my fingers crossed and I can also see how that makes it more difficult for new players to understand how to play. I feel very similarly about the brief explanation about ability scores/checks. To me, being in the DM guide makes sense logically as it prevents the "I want to roll exactly this to look for exactly this to get the answers I hope to roll high enough for." This gives DMs slightly more control of what the character will roll and what information they gleam based off of how they describe their actions/goals. I see it's importance for the PHB. I am split 50/50 on this one. For me I am also split 50/50 as it is important for new characters to understand what makes their character who their characters are in terms of abilities; and, I kind of like this provides more customization for players without necessarily worrying about Min/Maxing to be the ultimate adventurer. While I can understand how beneficial it is for new players to understand the importance of how specs will impact their character in and out of combat, I also like how there is more flexibility/less pressure to min/max and play the adventurer you have in mind. I may be thinking about these subtle changes on face value, and I am seeing more and more professionals (teachers, therapists, professors, social workers, behavioral analysts, etc.) discuss using TTRPGs as an intervention. From that perspective, and just from the perspective as a player for the last 5 years, I personally like to create unconventional characters which means I may not have the best "stats" to be a Wizard because I could never max out my Intelligence; yet I was able to play a more wise sage with knowledge knowing wisdom would not have much use outside of role-playing. I know this is very nuanced and very specific. I wonder if this is where there is more of an emphasis on session 0. All of that to say is I am very torn and am curious as to why. I would hope/assume it is all in the DM guide and I hate that we have to wait to find out for such a while. I am sure they are releasing the 3 new books in this order for a specific reason. To me, I would have preferred the DM guide before the monsters manual and again this is all opinion and assuming a lot about what is in what manual. I hope you all decide to do a video of the overall review of the 2024 updates once everything is released.

I actually think the thing that most excites me in this book are the new subclasses. I'm a big fan of the College of Dance, but I am also a big fan of the Monk class, and College of Dance (with the changes to the Bard chassis) looks like it could be a very exciting class to play. Basically an arcane monk - and that is a fantasy I'd tried to experience in 5E previously with a number of unwieldy multiclasses that just did not work because of the statistical demands of the 2014 monk.

17:24 yeah, I've been playing new monk for four months now (playtest version). Mercy monk. Recently changed some rules after Crowford interview sbout monks. This monk is so good. Deflecting melee attacks is so good. New Focus spending and refilling rules are amazing. Also I could get my hands on dragonskin belt and now I have so many Ki. This class now beats the shite out of anything.

12:23 I agree here about the examples of skills needing to be explained in the PHB ('24) because it helps players choose what your character is good at! I couldnt imagine being a new player wanting to create a detective and not knowing I should have picked up Insight to sus out oddities in a creature's behavior. The PHB is the place to help you create your character, so it should help you do that in all the best ways possible

Did Monty put some points in strength? He looks pretty buff here. As for the PHB, I like most of the changes, except Spiritual Weapon. As a cleric player who already has a ton of concentration spells, this sucks. The Counterspell change may also make the spell unusable against tougher monsters, especially bosses. We'll see how that works out.

Thank you, Kelly and Monty, for this higher-level overview of changes and your impressions of 5.24! I watch quite a few D&D channels and have been seeing a lot of very crunchy, detail-oriented content, and your macro view is insightful and refreshing. I am, for the most part, excited about the new rules and classes, particularly the narrowing of the martial-caster divide and overall evening out of the power level between and within classes. As someone who loves playing martial characters, I'm super happy that feats like GWM and SS got reigned in - IMO, if something is so powerful that you are cutting yourself off at the knees by not taking it, it either needs to be nerfed or become a core feature, because it isn't really a choice. By far my biggest gripes are with the Ranger - my favourite class, and the one that I played most often in 5e - the UA looked so promising, but what came out straight up feels worse than Tasha's, and is quite possibly the weakest class once again (monks look great though). Overall, I'm excited, but not enough to go out and buy the new PHB as soon as it comes out. Once the DMG and MM are out as well... maybe. I look forward to seeing more videos from you, especially updated tier rankings!

I'm like a broken record but : the main issue with the 2014 rules were related to out of combat mechanics, specifically skills. The reason some class features were considered "weak" is more often than not because there was no clear game mechanics to oversee the actual effect of those features (old ranger exploration features jump to mind). Very very disappointing to see this was not only not fixed, but it seems the ability checks section got even smaller. I will wait for the new DMs guide reviews before deciding if I will ever consider playing the 2024 version.
@ericpeterson8732

I mean, that's the thing. We can still use Xanthar and Tasha's subclasses, we just need to fit them into the new base class. (I'm going to tweek Arcane Archer to get more Arcane Shots by allowing an extra shot when they get a new one or proficiency times per rest, which works out basically to the same thing)

In one respect I like the stat increases attached to background rather than species. In 2014 there was always those specific species to play for certain classes; however, the new rule may play the same way in regard to creating a specific back story. I was thinking of a monk coming from a noble background but the ability changes don't help there.
@zenflow7323
Ай бұрын
Both are imperfect, but stat increases being attached to background makes less sense imo. Imagine you made 2 characters, both are fighters with same ability scores and backgrounds, but one is an orc, and the second one is a halfling. By the logic of 2024 player's handbook they will be equally strong and tough, even though one of them is a 6 ft tall muscular killing machine and the other one is a funny 3 ft tall guy, who is supposed to be more dexterous. I'll let my players use both versions of this rule. If a player decides that stat increases from the background they picked won't fit their character, they can still use stat increases from the 2014 player's handbook and vice versa. WotC should've done the same
@YMasterS
Ай бұрын
@zenflow7323 yeah, them being as strong and tough as each other quite obviously makes more sense.
@zenflow7323
Ай бұрын
@@YMasterS It makes no sense. If you are an orc or a goliath you are stronger than most of other races by default, and even if a halfling lives in the same place/culture as them and has the same class/skill set etc. they still will be different in terms of their physical capabilities. Like i said, one is a 6 ft tall muscular creature, and the other one if a 3 ft tall person. In some cases it can depend on what type of character you want to make, but the logic of 2014 player's handbook was much more understandable and realistic (it's weird to use the word "realistic" in the context of a fantasy setting, but you know what i mean. It's just more believable). The case of halfling being as strong as an orc (or a goliath) would be an exception, rather then something normal. That's why the new rule is weird. But again, i'm ok with my players using 2014 or 2024 stat increases, depending on what they want. If it fits their character's idea, it's ok
@YMasterS
Ай бұрын
@zenflow7323 it makes perfect sensè if you're not an idiot. Which weighs more, a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks? Your problem is you started with the conclusion that orcs SHOULD be steonger, then worked backwards from that to forcibly justify it.
@zenflow7323
Ай бұрын
@@YMasterS Buddy, if you have no idea what to say in a conversation, or what a person you are replying to is talking about, sometimes it is better to just not say anything, instead of talking nonsense, insulting people and telling them they have a problem. How in the world is your question about feathers and bricks related to the topic of two different fantasy races having different physical capabilites in lore? What makes it even funnier, is the fact that one orc weighs as much as like 5 or 6 halfling, lol. You can't be serious. Halflings were always described in books (in 2014 D&D books, for example) as dexterous creatures who always try to avoid hostility, while creatures like orcs or goliaths biologically tend to be bigger and stronger than others. Even if you put them in the same conditions, where they live in the same region, they are going through the same trainings with same diet and in the end they have the same skill set, their bodies are still very different and they just can't be the same. I think i need to repeat this again: we are talking about a 3 ft tall creature competing with something twice (or sometimes even more) bigger and stronger. It's like if you claim that a wolf is as strong as a bear, just because both animals were born and grew up in the same forest. They have their strengths and weaknesses, that's how they were born and that what makes them unique and special. Genetics has a big role even in real life, in sports and bodybuilding for example. It's a fact and there is nothing for me to forcibly justify in this case. I'd rather not continue this discussion, because so far you haven't made a single argument and it's getting us nowhere

the caster that was nerfed hard is specifically the evocation wizard. It has been destroyed, it is basically obsolete and replaced by the draconic sorcerer. The utility and control wizard is still strong, it's just the blaster role that has been completely moved from the evoker to the sorcerer. They could have removed the evocation wizard completely from the PHB but instead decided to actively nerf it to signal that the only blaster caster is now the sorcerer.

I was excited about exploring the rules, not for myself per se, but for my players who want to try them out. Then I went to Gen Con earlier this month where they were pre selling the books, but they made the process so convoluted that I gave up after trying for two days. So the way WOTC handled the pre-release really has left a bitter taste, even more than the OGL scandal, that I am now not even sure I want to buy the books when they finally get released, which is the opposite of what they were trying to do.

I'm pretty sure in the video reveals Jeremy mentioned that to play a half-species you use the abilities for one species and the physical characteristics of another. It's a bit strange if that's not in the PHB, because it was in the UA and seems a pretty core mechanic to me

Ok, you’re the ones who asked. I’m very excited about many of the changes to classes and subclasses, especially to finding out combos and optimization options with new feats and spells. I was the most excited about monk (especially elements, but also shadow after watching Colby’s video about all changes to classes and subclasses), Fighter (always was one of my favorites conceptually and can now hold up to my estimations of being the tactical master of battle, also because of Eldritch Knight improvements, seems very fun to play), Bard (especially with the improved versatility of Magical Secrets), Sorcerer (with the new amount of spells known, especially with subclasses that get added spells, and with the changes to metamagic cost, this seems like it will be incredibly fun and powerful to play), Wizard (there were few changes to the class itself, but I like being able to switch a prepared spell and love the new Savant feature), and also a few other subclasses that I didn’t use to have interest in. After watching Colby’s video, my attention was brought to the improved power of the Warlock, with Pact of the Blade at 1st level and the potential improvements to it, being able to attack 3 times eventually. I’m super excited to seeing some cool builds with this, be it straight classed, combined with bard, paladin, sorcerer, fighter or any other way. I’m also a bit more interested in Barbarians, since they aren’t exclusively useful in combat now. But also because they get a bit of tactical choice with weapon masteries and brutal strikes. I could go on with opinions about everything, but these are the main things I’m excited about.

As a long time player/dm, I was hoping for a more extensive addition to the core rules rather than minutia rehashing. Sounds like it's a mix of both in the PHB. Personally I think later editions of D&D core products have missed (on purpose) the intricacies of say the 2nd edition Kit Books and 3e 3rd party sourcebooks which let people see how things LIKE backgrounds and careers could be varied to suit specific campaigns and well-imagined background stories. Those old books are still quite useful both to DMs and Players alike but I suspect most of the mainstream won't even be aware of their value outside of being collectibles. This is where I think based on your review the 2024 PHB has fallen flat.

Imagine if there were background-style origin connections of feats to the six characteristics, and to character traits so your flaws provide a feat ("I eat my feelings" -> Chef; "I overshare" -> Musician..), your bonds and ideals and personality traits come with feats.. your faith, your size, your alignment. Are you lawful? Then feats related to regular practice. Chaotic? Feats related to short attention span.. Before, it seemed all those properties of a character were disconnected to who the character was, mechanically, and feats could connect the what to the who.

Another great video! I can't wait to see how my players use these new features. Great point about the feats, it might be worth respeking the character to give them that little boost in feats. I 100% agree it is a bummer about the backgrounds. Apparently they lost their ribbon features as well which in my opinion is also sad. Maybe there will be options to put them back or we can just add them back in? The noble having a little valet to help with redundant tasks was really cool. Other wise, I am chopping at the bit to make some new rangers. A centaur ranger charging in with a great sword and getting that free bonus actin kick sound really fun. Now the fighting style make this more viable 😊 I will live how Ranger can have so many diverse builds. For me that is more important than what does or doesn't have concentration. A lot of drama about hunter's mark but I am going to wait and see how it all plays out.
