I found out the two cabs lengths are for radius curves. The longer cab is for larger radiuses, and the smaller installed cab is for smaller radiuses approaching the 22 inch stated minimum.

The Allegheny was the Big Boy's little brother at a little more than 76 and a half feet long while the Big Boy was a little more than 85 feet. I really do like what you have showed us in looks and sound and I'm convinced I need one. Great video, Jersey Bill

Hi James, I appreciate the review, but when they can't even pull 100 railcars, I am out! Broadway Limited Imports would definitely do a better job. I have two of the M.T.H. Electric Trains Versions that have synchronize smoke, metal diecast and pulling power to pull a little over 100 railcars! I wouldn't trade one of my M.T.H. Electric Trains versions for two of those. On the front of the smoke box door is the George Westinghouse Cross-Compound Pumps used for the air brake system. The big long tanks just pass the cab are air reservoirs. You can find this information in The Locomotive Cyclopedia Volume II, How A Steam Locomotive Works and The Allegheny Lima's Finest.

Hi James, that was a really good review. And it looks like a great model. I have collected some older Rivarossi models.. I remember when they first came out, and were “must haves”, but I “didn’t have” the money ... Their die making still stands up today, I must take a look at some of their current upgrades.

James you need to correct the position of the eccentric crank on the rear engine on the engineers side, at 30.16 you can see it is way off, compared to the front engine which is much closer to where it should be. On a piston valve engine when the crank pin is at the very bottom of the wheel,, or the piston is at mid stroke the eccentric crank and eccentric rod joint will be close to a right angle with the axle center line and to the right of the axle. While just aesthetics on this HO model it could be causing stress or binding due to its position and over moving the valve gear.

The tanks on the top are for the air brakes. There is not enough space underneath the walkways were they typically are kept with the extra steam pipework.

I have 3 previous rivarossi alleghany’s other than the one having a bad gearbox(quick fix my dad and I figured out) all of them great runners. It’s good to see they improved more on their gearboxes. I just don’t like that all versions have the pinstriping, I would just like a flat black version. and the front number plate was on all the H8’s

For the people, that have experience with Rivarossi: is the quality comparable with ScaleTrains/Athearn Genesis/BLI??? I always hesitate to buy something from Hornby/Rivarossi because it gives me often a cheap impression
@jlwii2000
3 күн бұрын
running quality is high, the major difference between Rivarossi and BLI/Athearn would be that the Rivarossi version of this locomotive doesn't have lighted classification lights or number boards. I couldn't find a function for lighted number boards anyways. Rivarossi also doesn't have puffing smoke, which some people like and some people don't like.

I ran my example from this production on a 19" curve. That's really pushing it to its limits, so I have to take it nice and slow, but it can do 19" I wouldn't go much smaller than that. 18" is probably its absolute limit.

MY REVIEW How can anyone mix up male and female DCC connectors ?!! The male is the one which (hello) projects outward and (hello) plugs into the female on the tender (if that rings a bell in any way)...The (what?) "3 trucks under the cab" It's like you never give a dang..And "this front gear in front of the smoke box" are the air pumps for gosh sakes !! How many times have you seen them on steam by now ? And when are you going to decide if you're talking about a 'truck' as opposed to axles or wheel sets ? You continually fluba-dub that too ! A coal load SHOULD be shiny, while you say the mat finish is good ! It's the 'deck plate' not the tread plate.16:40 did you say "glide hand" ? 16:47 You are going to pull a 'consist' with it ?!! I truly hope those MUed diesels are in neutral ! The chuffs are out of sync because the loco has 2 separate engines, and will never be in sync just by nature of things and by the fact that the drivers slip here and there (at least on the 1:1 scale they do).. And why in hell, for the cost of the 'thing' it wasn't fit with at least a dummy knuckle coupler on the nose !? Why anyone does a torque test is beyond me, what with how everyone's cars, no matter how many they have in the 'rake', are not going to weigh the same or roll the same anyway..Someone's 85 cars may have better rolling ability than someone else's 20 cars due to all kinds of things; metal, plastic, crud, track quality... By this time, with how long you've been with trains and reviewing them I'd think you'd have gotten RR nomenclature down pat. But Pat is still wondering about your male and female reversal roles ! 🙃
