Took delivery of a LR yesterday, and pushed 300km on a loop around D'Agular and Wivenhoe in Brisbane. Was a mix of everything; Highway, Coarse Chip, Windy Hills, and to top things off headed home through the CBD during the afternoon peak. Overall it was a fantastic first proper drive, and I will echo Paul on a few things; Cameras are great, but ultrasonic sensors are king. It may improve over time, but you still have to keep your wits about you. We didn't always have cameras and sensors but is still a bit of a backward step. The buttons are already second nature, and only become a problem at low speeds, like car parks or, two opposing tight turns. Coarse chip roads still make a bit of noise, but overall its very comfortable, composed, and quiet, particularly on country roads. 99% of the time, Auto Steer is magic. 1% of the time, it can do weird things, but that's why you have to pay attention. The top glass is very well shielded and is the perfect tint, but on a hot day, can get quite toasty and heat the top 6 inches of the cabin up. Sunshade is probably a good idea, but it really is a spacious place. I wish there was a 12v (or 16v? for newer cars) in the boot; I love my car fridge and have to figure out how to get it hooked up to this car. the USB-C ports being powered all the time is a nice touch. The app is fantastic, just don't accidentally pop the frunk from the other side of the world in an airport car park... Range anxiety is a total non issue, espeically nowadays with so much DC charging and Type 2 around. Plugshare is great! Interior fit and finish is now pretty good, and although the IKEA showroom isn't for everyone, it is now (at least for my Giga Shanghai car) is properly decent. 250kW DC charging is mint, and even though it is only at that peak for a short time, the thermal management system (and in my case, the NMC battery) can get you topped up before you can grab a servo pie and take a whiz.

@DanubeRS

@@stevenleonards4843 Yes and no; I think I had already made my mind up in the form of a preorder in September by the time the Seal was making waves. I'm not saying it's a bad car, but it didn't appeal to me in key areas the Tesla did. I genuinely think BYD and the other Chinese manufacturers will be a huge driving force of overall EV ownership worldwide, particularly with their monopoly of LFP chemistry and the downward price pressure they put on EVs. Most of this came down to the integration of the Tesla ecosystem; the App, Supercharger network, 3rd party integrations (like ChargeHQ, TeslaFi) and how it all works with the car operating system in a seamless way. I also have a PowerWall and although there is no integration there between the car, the reliability and experience of ownership as a whole have been flawless even though it is at a premium to other similar products. I was seriously considering an i4 e40 as well, as it is also a great car with exceptional build inside and out, and particularly in the RWD variants, a very capable canyon carver. It just was too expensive, and I think the next generation on a pure-EV platform will be much better packaged. I do have a soft spot as I remember driving an i3 for the first time years ago thinking BMW was at the bleeding edge of EV development, but I think the Tesla package with all its oddities and quirks is still the car to beat.

It’s very quiet, very easy to drive and stick at or under speed limits. Early 2024 Melbourne is crawling with mobile speed cameras and “plod”. Since I got my Model 3 in 2022, Tesla has removed the cruise control radar, the ultrasonic parking sensors, the passenger lumbar support, the physical drive selector and, of course, the indicator/wiper stalk. They have added a partially redundant rear passenger screen (I don’t have rear seat passengers very often), ambient lighting strips and ventilated seats. Better ride quality and sound proofing is probably the biggest bonus in the upgrade, but it doesn’t make up for the pitfalls, that appear to be “Tesla (Elon) knows best”. They are truly the Apple of the car world by selling manufacturing cost reductions as “improvements”. This car looks better than my current M3 (imo). The head and tail lights particularly. The tail lights now look like they have been designed for the world market where orange indicators aren’t jammed in as an afterthought. But, as another reviewer pointed out (and hasn’t been commented on by anyone else), when the boot is raised, the outer corner of the indicator is quite a sharp point and positioned perfectly to catch your head. The upgrade to my Model 3 is looking more and more likely to be a Seal Premium.

It is brilliant for keeping dogs safe, controlling the cabin temperature, disabling door lock buttons and putting up a large message on the screen for “concerned citizens”. I have 2022 Model 3 (LFP with parking sensors) and it comes with Pilot Sport tyres which are really good. Over the years I have had a few sporty cars (turbos etc) but my model 3 handling and in many cases road holding is better than any of my previous cars. Here NZ we have a lot winding narrow roads so I appreciate the handling. The things I'm not so keen on with the Highland is the reduced grip on the new tyres (of course you can replace with something better) , handling (as it seems to have got worse from the reviews I have seen) and also stalk delete (while I'm sure I would get used to it, it just seems worse to me). Although I would appreciate the quieter interior of the new car and less bumpy ride (although for me not if means worse handling). I really like my Model 3 over all, but the safety features sometimes drive me nuts e.g. phantom braking, having to remember to turn off lane departure every time I want to drive on a tight narrow road (as it turn back on after a drive). However totally get that the refresh is targeting the majority of users who do a lot of highway cruising, its just a pity there's a few compromises.

Agree with these comments. I replaced the Oem ps4 with ps5 on my 2019 SR. I like performance Michelins typically. Bad move, noisier and less range. Whilst I like the knowledge it is super safe in braking/handling and extra longevity with the PS5, range and quieter on the open road is more important to me these days (as there are no tracks near where I live now). The handbook ev tyres on my new 3 this month will be a better compromise. (I was surprised at the long 38m braking test result - we have lots of Roos here so that’s important too, if you even get a chance to brake for those jumpers!) I will miss the Mercedes right stalk, and the ultrasonic sensors, but the hw4 cameras will enhance the visual views.

One of the best channels for balanced reviewing of EVs. But can CE please supply us with a breakdown of stats for all BEVs, all PHEVs and all HEVs sold in a calendar month on its website, after VFacts is released? Some sites just give us the top 10 BEVs and that's the end of the news, but the path to electrification in Australia is a bit more nuanced.

Yes they need a heads up display at least as if the screen is broken or not working then how do you know the speed you are doing. If I get a ticket for speeding, I am sending it to Tesla and Elon to pay it for me.

I like the sleeker look. Heads up display would be nice, and physical buttons. I am short sighted so a quick glance down with multifocals would be way better than having to look at the screen in the middle. I have an iPhone so option with Apple Music and Podcast is great. How does it integrate with text messaging however? If that’s solved, I could live without CarPlay. Wonder when we’ll see Qi2 wireless charging in cars.

Despite no carplay, iPphone integration is good for messaging - you can dictate messages using the car's voice recognition. Messages are displayed on the car's display.

Have ordered the Model 3 LR AWD. Did have on order the BYD Seal, and probably would have purchased the AWD version. I had to cancel due to the Seal having low ground clearance compared to other sedan options. I was guaranteed to scrape the underside of the front bumper just under the front lip on my steep(ish) driveway entrance into my carport. The Seal only had 2 centimetres clearance. The Model 3 is 4 centimetres better at 6 centimetres. Other higher than normal speed bumps and some driveway entrances would be an issue with the Seal. The Seal is better value (IMO), but an extra 4k for the Tesla stung a little, but less likelihood of scraping the bumper won me over. The electromagnet requiring pressing a screen button to open the glovebox is of no benefit. And I'll just force myself to get used to no stalks for the indicators and wipers. A bit of a silly U.S. centric decision When will you be doing a similar test of the 2024 LR AWD version?

I'm not even 10 minutes in and I've seen two things that I really don't like. Aside from the utter lunacy of having everything on a daft touch screen. The rear lights being integrated into the tailgate, means that if you stop at the side of a dark road or in poor visibility and need to get something out of the boot, you have no lights to help protect you. Unless, the remaining side lights actually are functional, which from their colour, does not appear to be the case. I'll give that the benefit of the doubt until I seek confirmation. The second is that ambient lighting strip on the dashboard just under the windscreen. I hope they allow you switch that part off, as I'd hate to have that light annoying me whilst driving. Not liking it thus far...

I was being curious, and checked the comprehensive insurance for a Tesla 3. Unsurprisingly, it's more than doubled than insuring my current 2020 Subaru STI, and tripled my 2018 Forester. This cost alone pays for petrol for the whole year (if I drive 10k/year in my STI).

19:40 - You don't get used to the lack of stalks - test drove this setup for nearly an hour - no problem in normal turns, but a series of quick left /right especially with the wheel turned upside down and it's a complete fumble-fest - you can't just keep you hands on the wheel when it's upside down and activate the buttons they are on the otherside of the wheel - your left thumb can't physically reach around to the required position.
@jeremymorrissy9144
7 ай бұрын
This is so true. This is why I cannot recommend this car to my friend/family. Trying to indicate out of roundabouts or quick turns at low speed make it so so awkward to drive, and is not something that you can get used to (because the wheel and buttons are reversed when upside down). It truly is a design flaw - because you shouldn’t need to re learn how to drive because a company forces a new sub par method upon you. Thinking it is okay or better is literally just cope. It is objectively a downgrade.

Just like I will never get used to having the indicator stalk on the left and the windscreen wiper on the right side of the steering column. But that is just me.
@jeremymorrissy9144
7 ай бұрын
@@kdegraa I mean…. Changing position of the left and right stalks and their function is definitely annoying depending on where your car is from. But I don’t think it’s similar to having buttons on the steering wheel for left and right indication. It would be like (hypothetically) having the left and right stalks changing what they control depending on the rotation of the wheel (since being at full lock means that the buttons are now reversed and also on the other side of the steering wheel). You could imagine that button press for indicators would be very difficult to get used to.

@@jeremymorrissy9144 When I received the email from Tesla saying deliveries had been suspended due to a compliance issue, I immediately thought that the moving of the indicators to the steering wheel was the reason for the delivery suspension. As we know it turned out to be the middle seat tether.

From my own experience, if you already have a made in China Model 3, then it's not really worth the upgrade. If you are in this situation and looking for a second EV sedan, the Seal is the better option. If you don't already have either car, then the decision will be a bit harder, for sure. Each car has its own benefits. Although, lack of stalks may be a deal breaker for some people.

You talk of Radar all around (i.e. not being there), but no, it was ultrasonics.. but the point is well made, This car is way less safe than say a contemporary camry with RCTA etc. I was considering upgrading from the 2021 Model 3 Long Range but frankly I don't like the direction they are going in, and the software has been less than stallar.. I'd have a look at the BYD but for the slightly sloppy suspension on that. It seems to be something China is not good at.
