I like how you bring the Software Developer approach of always tinkering and "refactoring" to things like camping. Really enjoyable to watch.

Thanks so much! Yeah my brain works the same way no matter what I'm doing. What's funny is how often I feel working on the Land Rover is just like solving a bug!

I will literally use zero of the products you have mentioned. But I appreciate, respect and love videos of these kind. Especially your steady voice makes it look like I am listening to an intelligent person, rather than someone who is trying to sell me things. Thanks Ben.

wasn't expecting the clip you shadily skulking around your own car, it made me chuckle. Really interesting video on this stuff. I've always liked the idea of doing a road trip around the UK and I've been exploring lots of different options for this, including the idea of vanlife, or just doing it in my current car, but this seems like a pretty viable setup for this sort of thing. Very interesting too see. Great video Ben!

Enjoyed the overview, some nice ideas there. I do like your vids about optimisation of daily workflow and it struck me that this setup requires a lot of unpacking, assembling, repacking etc, versus a van where beds, seats, kitchen, and shelter are right there already. Of course that comes with other tradeoffs 😂
@BenVallack

Yeah cost is the main thing there 😀 I've tried to make this possible with minimal packing/hassle but it's definitely more hassle than a van for sure. But, I have the off road ability, on road comfort (and sound system!) - I think one day some kind of pop-top might be on the cards but the cost is so prohibitive.

@@BenVallack yeah it is hard to argue with £3.5k! I've always wanted one to experiment with. Currently have a Tesla but would consider a dual setup like yours. I miss being able to carry stuff like DIY materials as well.

@@marconifpv508 For sure - it wasn't quite that simple but still a bargain - see full log of everything I had to do to it here: www.disco3.co.uk/forum/bensla-d3-2008-hse-stornoway-grey-205232.html

As a 5+ year Land Rover owner I tell everyone to never ever buy Land Rover. Mine has the turning radius of a city bus, more backwards engineering than a wooden light bulb and the dependability of a politician. There is much better out there.

Lol yeah I get that they're not for everyone. Find me something that has this for £3.5k though: -Air suspension for self levelling and solving the off-roader on road center of gravity issue -Amazing driving position/comfort -7 seats -Lovely to drive (smooth responsive power, great steering feedback, proper road holding ability) -just amazing to look at -delightful sound system -actually Disco 3 turning radius has always impressed me (beating my Ioniq and previous Model Y) -Thriving aftermarket for parts and accessories (good supply from breakers too) -Steering headlights that correct for dip and inlines -flat cargo area with seats down Basically as a second car for a project like this I don't think it can be beaten. Land Cruiser is probably close but I'm not convinced it would be as nice to drive and certainly not as many around at this price. And certainly not as nice to look at! But I'm under no illusions as to the kinds of headaches it can bring to the table. The first 6 months of ownership were chasing a high pressure fuel pump fault (among many other maintenance catch up items). I replaced this myself with a part from a breakers for £250 (this is a 3/4k job if you took it to the dealer). I think having DIY mechanical inclination is key to this. It would be prohibitively expensive otherwise. You can see the full list of repairs I've done here: www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post2367260.html#2367260 It's done 190k miles so I know it's just a lottery as to how long it will last before I have to make the big decision (replace engine or scrap!) but I'm really enjoying it while it's running so well. It's probably the car the whole family enjoys going in more than any other car we've ever had (Model Y included! Obviously not in any way comparable but at the end of the day the Disco is more comfortable and better to fall asleep in as a passenger!) We do save it for special trips / camping though - 2021 Ioniq EV is current daily driver.

@BenVallack for sure, there are some great compact solutions out there! Usually it just takes a bit of additional research, but not having a ton of options is also surprisingly freeing.

How is that clickbait lol? It's literally item number 8! Have never and will never undisclose an advert. The dash cam was an ad and was labeled as 'sponsored segment' accordingly.
