My daddy had that same addiction. He covered 2 acres with a shed, filled it with firewood. My sister and I will never have to cut wood or pay for heat. God bless you Papa see you and mama soon. Praise God for his gift of eternal life. Nice to see you work, thank you for your videos . I didn't get to watch papa work. P.s. A guy told me one time I'll never get a date if they see all that firewood first. Pss .daddy passed away while cutting down a tree at the church. No accident, just was his time, healthy till the moment he was taken, while doing what he loved most.....cutting wood.

First off the tape measure and piece of chalk is freak-en brilliant. My friends wife is always wanting to help (gets in the way)I think that's her job now. Firewood cutting is part of enjoying the woods and cleaning up the woods, further more those trees fall on fences, so they have to go. Firewood is money in the bank, when I've had to buy (soft wood mix) it cost $500 a cord, and they didn't even stack it.

My name is Ian and I’m a woodaholic. Nothing beats heading to the bush with a buddy or two, the tractor and the fresh air. I cut for myself and a few friends and their families. We only have poplar and spruce here but it’s great socializing. In addition to the standard way I went out and bought a small range road processor. My back isn’t getting any younger and it helps one still put in a full day. I still prefer the smaller equipment; less damage and it’s more fun.

I cut my wood at 20-22", and I just turn my saw and use the 20" bar as my measuring stick. Also, I stack my firewood in perfect racks 8 ft high and 24 feet long under my woodshed. My wife wonders why I take the time to make it perfect, but I remind her that it is often in the background of her pictures in the yard, and at the end of the day, I like to stand back and look at what I accomplished. If it looks like crap, there's no pride in your work. Also, since I have an outside wood burner. ( firebox is 48" deep and the opening is 24"x24" -if I can lift it, it goes in ), I don't have to spit anything. I have keep about 2 months worth split small, so my wife could load it if anything were to happen to me. Always prepare for the unexpected! Keep the videos coming.

Cutting firewood is definitely addictive! Its fun to constantly improve how efficiently you can become. Its also fun when you can build your own equipment, for example I built a double acting log splitter that ran off my tractor hydraulics. Its amazing all the things that go into it and what it takes to keep the equipment going when your doing it for a business.

The best way I have seen to measure fire wood length to cut is, by using a magnet with a wooden dowel cut to the length you want accounting for the thickness of the magnet. Glue the magnet to the end of the dowel(I prefer construction adhesive for this). Be sure to use a good magnet! Stick it to the saw bar and Bobs your Uncle. The time this saves plus the fact you can cut different length dowels and swap on the fly with no math helps a lot.

There is so many burls, snarls, knots and forks in my oak, elm, ash, hickory, maple and others that if I tossed all that out to keep my piles stacked straight I'd be dropping a much greater number of trees. Or at least a second wood shed out back to house them so my neatly stacked shed would be the only thing visible. To my eyes, there is not a prettier sight than my 36' x 12' D x 10 1/2' H wood shed totally stacked with all the above. Stacked, but not neat. Some of my stuff busts up in the snarliest fashion you can imagine. It stacks horribly, but burns just as good as any of it. We process enough to heat three households and consistently keep two large workshops warm and occasionally a third. Though I thoroughly enjoy seeing your beautifully stacked piles, I personally do not have to time nor the inclination to obtain that level of bucolic bliss on my own. But, that's what makes the world go around. lol. Keep cutting, splitting and stacking because it is good for the mind and body. Good video sir.

I too like to work with wood. One bit of advice, you obviously have a lot of nice equipment which is essential for cutting down on the work and keeping the enjoyment up. If you get the chance try a super split log splitter. I did and got rid of my hydraulic splitter. My favorite part of the whole process is splitting now thanks to the super splitter. They are expensive but the time they save is worth it to me. Also I converted mine to electric which really cuts down on the noise which also increases the enjoyment since I can hear the birds etc.

Mike, love your videos. I too love cutting firewood in our timber at our farm in Iowa. We use some in our fireplace and I sell the rest for a little winter income. (White & Red Oak, White & Red Elm, and occasional Black Walnut. I also like an organized wood pile, even though it takes a bit more time. I use a 700cc 4X4 quad w/winch & log chains, Stihl 261 & 441 saws & Stihl Peavy and old WW2 Jeep Army trailer behind that holds a lot of wood....but I really wish I had a tractor like you do to get in the timber with. I also do some tree work on the side and get some nice wood to use/sell. Just bought a Granberg Alaskan Sawmill and corresponding rails for my Stihl 660 to do some milling and make a bookshelf and desk, so looking forward to that...Keep the videos coming fellow Timber man!

Hey mike I saw a different video of yours saying that cutting firewood is hard on the back. (Think it was the making money from fire wood video) Have you ever thought about putting a 25" bar on your saw? I know it's possible cause I have a 362 among other saws bigger and smaller, my 362 is the current model replacement of your saw and I actually run a 28" bar. I work as an arborist so that's my need for it. It does add a little more weight but there is a lot less bending over. Oh and I'm 6ft tall to.

I noticed your pile of stacked wood is uncovered. Do you leave them that way all year round? Do you bring the wood in outta the WX a few weeks before burning?

Move your chainsaw holder to the backside of your wood holder, that way you're not stacking rounds of fire wood against saw bar.
