Nice video. It was interesting to watch how you split wood as well as your comments on gas cans. I have a cabin in the northern US that I heat with wood. I go through about a cord a year that I split & cut myself. I even have an identical wood splitter. I too use pallets to stack wood on and I completely agree with you on the gas cans. The new ones are junk. The old ones are indispensable.

Hey it’s great to see I split rounds like you do. It’s fun to look at a round and see how many pieces I’m going to get from it. My volume is far less than yours and an electric splitter has worked well for me for 5-6 years. If I had your volume I’d definitely have your machine. Checking out your early videos is going to be fun. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into these, Mike.

Agree on the vertical splitting. It is rare that I use but I am sure happy that I have it when I do need it. Recently with the hurricane residue , we had a huge Gum tree go over that was 27 inches in diameter. I use the vertical to split them into thirds, then back to horizontal

Mike, i've been watching your more recent vids where you are using the Wolfridge log splitter, and while I'm impressed with the amount of wood you split in one hour in this video, that whole stack of rounds would've been done in about the same time with the wolfridge. And also I chuckled when you talked about the bigger splitters with six way heads, faster cycle times ect. Did you ever think you would end up with one when you started these videos? Its cool to see what you started out with in the early vids to what you have/use currently. P.s. Now they sell kits to convert those stupid ventless gas cans to vented cans. I've converted a few of mine. MUCH better.

Amen on the gas can talk! Spot on brother! I've got a VP can from racing dirt bikes. Best can on the market. I've been nursing several other Gott cans from the late 80's-90's, but they're getting a little ragged at this point. Need to buy a few more VP cans. The one I have is clear/white and makes it easy to see how much is left and good for reading the graduations on side when mixing in 2 cycle oil. Really envy your fire wood stacking skill!

Mike at the height of my large scale firewood business I told you about back when I owned 6 Multitek 2040 Firewood processors, for darn good split kindling, I had a log splitter like you have. I bought it from Northern Hydraulics. I bought the small tonnage one. Because I was after speed. Not strength. Fast as I could get it. When I got it, it had a 15 second cycle return. I knew that I could greatly improve the speed. And I did. I swapped out the pump for a much higher rating. I got it from 15 second down to 9 second. It stood waste high. One man Operation. On the other side of the splitter I waaaaaay over built a 2 feet 16 inches high, 3 feet long, 3 feet wide table. So that no pieces would fall off on the ground. Because as you know by now, the less you handle each piece of kindling or firewood for that matter, the far far better off you are. And one guy could easily fill up a 55 gallon barrel on average, 1 hour 38 minutes. Speed. Volume. Less time spent handling each piece the better off you are financially.

@@lostinmyspace4910 if you want to increase your enjoyment of disposing of the government regulated can. A must-have for this event though, is 50-yards at the least from the shooting position to Target, with bare ground around target area. At least 50 to 100 ft in diameter. For easier cleanup. One good-sized round sitting on the end. One quarter pound container of mixed Tannerite placed in middle of round. Fill gas can completely full of water and secure cap very tight. Place gas can on top of tannerite. Assume shooting position and shoot Tannerite with 22 long rifle or larger caliber. Enjoy the water mist, the gas can shredded for recycling, and kindling! It is also a good idea to have a well-protected spotter besides you!

Not just horrible, but dangerous and messy. I worked at a city run water treatement plant for nearly thirty years and was a jack of all trades. About first year they came out with these cans I was in charge of mowing our plant, pump stations, and water storage tanks. Of course every jug we had was one of these. One week of this me and my crews (mostly jail inmates) realeased more gasoline into the enviroment than we had before in our entire lives. Also, a fully loaded five gallon jug was hard as hell for most people to pick up from the top with one hand, tilt over and pour, because they almost all had to use the other hand to hold the stupid valve open. I still cite this as an example of how the government takes very small problems and make them worse with their solutions. As for my personnel use I would often go to estate sales and made sure to collect a half dozen old jugs for a dollar apeice just for the old spouts on them.

You can get vent for those gas cans. On e-bay the yellow vent caps that were on the old cans I bought some they work great. Drill a 1/2" hole and push it in. Tractor supply also sells the entire kit with the spout and vent. I won't use them but find someone throwing them away switch them over and give them to a friend. I have plenty of gas cans. But I total agree with the fact that the new styles are junk!!!

The new gas cans are the worst like most everything else you have people behind a desk making things and don’t have a clue. Seen many of your videos on stacking wood and drying time. Seen both stacking outside and underneath in a woodshed was wondering on the drying time for the outside vise inside. With you not covering your outside stacks with the weather you have there. Can you do a video explaining the difference or a comment on this subject thank you hope you and your family are doing well always stay safe.

I'm going back to the old videos I had never watched before. In this video, at 4:06 you said you'd never leave the wood in a pile like this because it wouldn't dry right. Today you have the concrete bin and an ever-growing pile. So what, if anything, has changed in your thinking on this? Maybe this video was more with regard to firewood for personal use, verses bulk processing for sale, where the length of time in the pile might be quite different.

i have a question about your wood stack. we bought a house in NY with 14 acres, trying to lower my oil bill with a wood stove. i like the way your wall of stacked wood looks. i understand the end columns of wood you have to keep the wall self standing, but i did see in the video what looked like a green metal pole at the end of the stack, is that needed for the wall stability? do you just have the log columns on either end of your log wall or do you do it in between also? also, what are your logs standing on the bottom to keep off the ground? thanks for any help. i enjoy your videos.

Also, regarding the EPA gas cans.....try an EPA spout on an older vented can, I've had good luck with that, once the original 'bendy drinking straw' spout deteriorated, I love the shut off function (if I react fast enough :D ).

Great video! What makes it great, is the smallest issue in the whole thing that I personally relate to. That piece of shit plastic gas can with the stupid ass locking mechanism. I walked into a Home Depot to buy a gas can, and that's all they carried. Any type you could buy had that spout you had to push down on. What a freakin' joke. First week I owned it the damn ass inner spring unsprung' piece of shit leaked. Could never figure out why they sold this crap, or even why Home Depot fell into the trap of selling this. Now you say EPA forced them to. I took Home Depot off the shit list, and entered EPA on the very top of that list. Thank goodness I started the list in pencil. BTW, I think I need to get the Husky log splitter. I am always getting stuck buying such big ass wood that doesn't even fit into my Lopi wod stove, and it's the biggest one they make. I like your smaller oak sticks.
