Congrats!. 2AR will definitely keep these MR2's on the road. It's a killer to spend any money on restoring a 5S and hard to find parts for the 3S (2nd Gen).

As always, excellent stuff, dude! Really satisfying to see this project 'complete' again. Excited to see your level of detail applied to the interior/cosmetics. Hope you're enjoying this new motors flat-out through the canyons right now!

I have to chime in one more time here because I am excited about the 2AR in the SW20. I love the 2GR in the SW20 but I like having the room to work on the 2AR and the fact you don’t have to dissemble the engine to work on it. I also love the fact that with the 2AR you get 45 hp more than 5s, 29 ftlbs more torque than 5s, and the 2AR weighs 105 lbs less weight than 5s. The power to weight ratio on the stock 5S is .314, the stock 2AR is .55. if you use Marc’s cams on the 2AR the power to weight ratio jumps to .74. The stock 2GR power to weight ratio is .75. This is a great conversion any way you look at it. Thanks to Marc at Frankenstein Motors for all the research and to Max for sharing his experience and knowledge on this conversion.

Yep I love the 2GR as well. The 2AR isn't half bad like you said. I did weigh the car a couple weeks ago. It came out to 2525lbs. Obviously in a completely "bone" stock CA legal form. Im sure you could easily get into the high 2400's.

I have seen someone dynoed what they thought was a healthy ish 5s with about 150k. Made 92whp lol. 2AR with bolt ons is a solid option I feel bang for buck wise.

Max, now that the 2AR has been in the car for a few months are you still liking the 2AR and what is your mpg?
@maxsehic

@@fredbowman7797 I've gotten about 31mpg with the S54 and highway only. Mixed between highway and street I get around 26mpg. It's been good. Although I will be changing things up very soon!

From the Scion tC. Rules specify that the intake/evap must be the same from the donor.

Good stuff. Congrats on the state bar. I will definitely be looking forward to the write ups and videos on the state ref process/rules to state ref the 2ar in the mr2. Also if you can explain how you got the evap to work with the mr2's oem gas tank, that would be awesome. Awesome work and keep it up.
@maxsehic
Жыл бұрын
I started by replacing all gaskets on the tank. All that was needed from the tC was the evap canister and purge solenoid. I just plumbed the tank breather line into the canister with a hose size adapter, and hooked up the purge line to the solenoid and canister. I'm also running the Scion tC gas cap, although I'm not fully sure if that's needed. Overall though it really wasn't too bad, I was expecting the EVAP system to give me a bunch of trouble but I nailed it first try.
@AhJemwangame

@@maxsehic okay cool. I thought the evap system would be complicated given that the mr2's are old. I always thought that some swaps require the gas tank from the donor in order for it to work but i guess not. but yeah thanks for the fast reply. I'll probably tackle the 2ar swap in my 91 mr2 whenever you do the write ups on the specfics.

So essentially it's like a more reliable easier to get parts for BEAMS SW20. The red top made around 180 or so and a 2AR with some mods and a tune if it's hitting 190s should be nicer than even a later revision BEAMS SW20. Very nice!

How did you put the na transmission to the 2ar and would be cool if you went individual throttle body instead.
@maxsehic
Жыл бұрын
Na transmission just bolts on. It uses 3 holes on the block. ITBs are cool but they don't really add much in power, just throttle response.

Thanks thinking of this swap on my 91 sw20 vs 1mzfe and cuz turbo cars get hot fast out here in the antelope valley 115 degrees in the summer plus it's nice knowing your foot spins the wheels at the rpm you want it at

Only 160whp? I made that with my 2az na, also how did you run all those evap lines to the frunk
@maxsehic
Жыл бұрын
I am also making 160whp NA 😝. Keep in mind this is completely bone stock with no tuning, no intake stuff or anything. The 2AR can make around 190whp unopened with bolt ons and a tune. With cams, valve springs, an exhaust, and an intake the FE can make 270. As for the EVAP lines, I ran new aluminum hardlines front to rear above the fuel tank.

What flywheel/clutch did you use for this?

I used the ACT prolite for the Scion tC2, and the Soutbend S54/3SGTE hybrid clutch kit since I'm running the S54 transmission.

Max did the S54 trans feel like it’s geared too high for the 2AR?
@maxsehic
Жыл бұрын
It’s definitely a shortly geared gearbox. I felt it was really short with the 5S, especially on the freeway. It’s definitely short-ish for the 2AR but VVT magic helps keep the noise down on the freeway. Power delivery is pretty solid though I will say. It doesn’t feel “too” short but I do wish the redline was higher of the stock ecu.

@@maxsehic The 350 or 351 might be the perfect trans for the 2AR in the SW20. Great work and thanks for sharing the build information. Looking forward to your write up and details. You could always increase the intake size from the side vent to the filter box and the sound of the intake system will be great. I did this on my 5se and the sound is really good. You may be restricted from doing that.

No choice? 1mz's are totally legal. 3mz's on 1mz electronics are commonplace.
